JOHN CURRIN

En Français plus bas

On June 29 2011, JOHN CURRIN, one of the most provocative artists of our times greeted us at DHC-ART to take us on a tour of his solo show, a retrospective of 24 paintings. It was amazing how candid he was throughout the visit, opening up on both his process and his emotion with each painting. On the first floor we see his excellently executed first step at finding his artistic voice. At this point he was exploring shape and color but not quite emotionally involved in the work. Then the most pivotal influence on his work showed up in his life, his wife RACHEL. Even as he is telling us about the artworks in which Rachel is the subject, we can see his soul rise to the surface and his presence with us was total.

The other floors show the evolving quality of his work. Influenced by the Great Masters we recognize the impact of artists like CARAVAGGIO , BRUEGEL, TITIAN, to name a few. His work delivers the same fascination as the works of these masters. The textures, the light, the realism and depth of certain features is mesmerizing. His expression of the human flesh, of silk, of hair, is so sensuous you may feel like you are invading someone's privacy.

The last floor of the exhibit is sexually explicit. Again JOHN CURRIN shared his ambivalence in tackling the controversial subject of pornography and Fine Art. He revealed he did feel shame at producing the works, embarrassment at what his parents would think of it. The works are sexually explicit but sumptuous none the less.
