At the movies, opening today!

In 2002, a group of journalists working for The Boston Globe, in charge of a segment called Spotlight did what few reporters did at the time. They investigated the entangled corruption of a system, both religious and legal, that permitted pernicious child abuse to continue unchecked in the Roman Catholic church. This movie retraces the steps taken by the journalists as they followed every lead from victims to perpetrator. I just loved this movie! The cast is excellent and every character is represented with their unique features. MARK RUFFALO is Mike Rezendes, a man who forgets to eat when he is chasing a story; MICHAEL KEATON is Walter 'Robby' Robinson, the man in charge of the department; RACHEL McADAMS is Sacha Pfeiffer, a woman who attends church regularly with her grand-mother and will have to reveal the truth about their parish priest to the elderly woman; LIEV SCHREIBER is Marty Baron, the new Editor in Chief who gets the ball rolling on the investigation. STANLEY TUCCI is again great in the role of a supporting character actor as Mitchell Garabedian, a lawyer who has been trying to get justice for the victims for many years. The movie is exciting from beginning to end, coherent and consistent.  A must see!

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR is Ray, an investigator that is part of a tight knit team of investigators on top of their game when the call comes in that the body of a young girl has been found in a garbage dumpster. JULIA ROBERTS is Jess, his partner but also, as it cruelly turns out, the mother of the victim. NICOLE KIDMAN is new at the prosecutors office and shares a mutual yet unrequited attraction for Ray. JOE COLE plays the prime suspect for the crime and here is where the plot becomes unusual. The movie follows two investigations on the same crime but in two different time frames in tandem. The three lead characters recall their memories of the first investigation while we are witnessing the ongoing investigation in real time. So Joe Cole is Marzin, the original suspect, and Beckwith, the current suspect who is believed by Ray to be Marzin after surgery. The movie is a tense thriller that has two surprise ending back to back. It is brilliant the way Director and screenplay writer BILLY RAY, along with other writers JUAN JOSÉ CAMPANELLA and EDUARDO SACHERI who wrote "El secreto de sus ojos" bend time to bring us to a revulsive conclusion.
