Nominated for an Oscar in the Foreign Film category this movie must be seen on a big screen. I always emphasize the cinematography when critiquing a film because that is where the big screen is essential.
The movie opens on the sea moving in profound waves that touch the rocks creep up the shore like fingers that want to grasp it. As we get deeper into the landscape we begin to see signs of human life that increase until we finally reach the home of Nikolay aka 'Kolia' played by ALEKSEY SEREBRYAKOV.
He is in a legal battle with the mayor of his town who wants to expropriate his land. His best friend, Dmitriy Seleznyov played by VLADIMIR VDOVICHENKOV is a lawyer who comes from Moscow to help. In the role of Kolia's wife Lilya is ELENA LYADOVA, his son Roman is played by SERGEY POKHODAEV and the mayor by ROMAN MADYANOV. The cast really brings it to the table as the characters move through the tragic unfoldment with profound emotions.
The visual language of the film is highly symbolic. An example of this happens when we see the dashboard from a driver's perspective. On his dashboard he placed the image of three icons of the Holy Virgin on the left and three nude women on the right. This type of juxtaposition is repeated subtly throughout this brilliant Russian tragedy.

En nomination pour un Oscar dans la catégorie des Films Étrangers, ce film doit être vu sur un grand écran. Je mets toujours l'emphase sur la cinématographie d'un film que je critique pour souligner l'importance de le voir ou non sur le grand écran.
Le film ouvre sur l'océan qui bouge en vagues profondes qui s'étirent pour toucher les rochers, les vagues éclaboussent comme des doigts qui veulent s'agripper au rivage. Alors qu'on pénètre dans le paysage on commence à voir des traces de vie humaine qui augmentent jusqu'à ce que nous arrivons à la maison de Nikolay aka 'Kolia' interprété par ALEKSEY SEREBRYAKOV.
Il est impliqué dans une bataille légale avec le maire du village qui veut l'exproprier de ses terres. Son meilleur ami, Dmitriy Seleznyov interprété par VLADIMIR VDOVICHENKOV est un avocat qui arrive de Moscou pour lui venir en aide. Dans le rôle de l'épouse de Kolia, Lilya, ELENA LYADOVA, son fils Roman est interprété par SERGEY POKHODAEV et le maire est interprété par ROMAN MADYANOV. La distribution est excellente alors que les personnages bougent avec le déroulement des situations tragiques qui leur fait vivre des émotions déchirantes.
Le langage visuel du film est hautement symbolique. Un exemple de ça arrive quand on voit le tableau de bord d'une voiture de la perspective du conducteur. Sur le panel on voit trois images iconiques de la Sainte Vierge à gauche pendant qu'à droite on voit trois femmes nues. Ce type de juxtaposition se répète subtilement tout au long de cette brilliante tragédie Russe.
