FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO EXPRESSIONISM, 1900-1914
This week-end, a dazzlingly colorful new exhibition will open its doors at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts that includes the work of some of the most beloved artists from the last turn of the century before World War 1. Every important artistic movement of that era is represented and some rare jewels are on our soil for the first time. It begins with the first breaking away from the very conservative art schools of Europe with artists like CÉZANNE and BRAQUE with cubism, fauvism with VAN DONGEN, expressionism with FEININGER and OTTO DIX, abstract avant-guard with FRANZ MARC and WASSILY KANDINSKY and of course the revolution in color and style by the likes of VAN GOGH and GAUGUIN! And more.

Cette fin de semaine, une nouvelle exposition éclatante de couleurs ouvre ses portes au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal qui inclut les oeuvres des artistes les plus aimés au tournant du dernier siècle avant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Chaque mouvement artistique majeur de cette époque y est représenté et quelques bijoux rares visitent notre sol pour la première fois. Ça commence avec les premières fractures auprès des écoles d'art très conservatives d'Europe avec des artistes tels CÉZANNE et BRAQUE avec le cubisme, le fauvisme avec VAN DONGEN, l'expressionisme avec FEININGER et OTTO DIX, l'art abstrait et avant-gardiste avec FRANZ MARC et WASSILY KANDINSKY et bien sûr la révolution des couleurs et du style introduit par des artistes comme VAN GOGH et GAUGUIN! TIMOTHY O. BENSON, curator of the exhibition, was fascinated with the origins of the artistic revolution of the pre-war era as well as the cultural interaction it caused that is still a fundamental heritage in our times. The art of that era shocked like never before with its brush strokes, its audacity, its confrontation with the mores, the explosive emotions put on canvas.

TIMOTHY O. BENSON, conservateur de l'exposition, était fasciné par les étapes embryonnaires de la créativité artistique tout comme par l'interaction culturelle qui demeure un héritage culturel fondamental de nos jours. L'art de cette époque a choqué comme nul autre avant avec ses coups de pinceaux, son audace, sa confrontation avec les moeurs, l'explosion des émotions sur les toiles.

There is a large room devoted to the First World War complete with photographs, movie reels, and art inspired by the horrors of that war. An abundantly illustrated catalogue accompanies this exhibition and it will help you deepen your experience of this important time for the arts and for humanity.
