JOHNESSCO RODRIGUEZ is a Mexican born entrepreneur renowned for his capacity to create large scale events that attract international attention. In recent months he has been roaming the globe to gather some of the world's best artists for two events that are set on two of the most elegant sites in Europe: the municipality of Monaco and the Island of Ibiza.

While the ART IBIZA event is still a work in progress, ART MONACO has already announced some of the artists that will be exhibited during the fair: BERNARD DE SOUZY a well esteemed French artist making a name for himself with his unique form of art called Subjectivism: CLAUDIA HECHT an exciting Mexican artist who paints and sculpts: MARTA TORREZ is a native of the luscious Ibiza island and proposes work that reflect the warm atmosphere of her native land.

AROUND THE WORLD: Condé Nast International Luxury Conference

A tiny glimpse at the conference that was held in Florence Italy the 21 - 23 April 2015 on the subject of luxury and all its links to new technologies. I wrote a few articles on the subject from the architectural perspective. Here it is the world of fashion that considers all the ramifications of the digital dimension on our capacity to buy and live luxuriously at THE CONDÉ NAST INTERNATIONAL LUXURY CONFERENCE.

At the Movies / Au Cinéma

LA FRENCH / THE CONNECTION


Français en bleu

In the 1970's Marseille became the #1 heroine exporter in the world with its biggest market being the United States. The 1971 WILLIAM FRIEDKIN movie The French Connection starring GENE HACKMAN viewed the events from the American perspective with one enraged hero, detective Popeye Doyle who chased the bad guys ferociously.

In CÉDRIC JIMENEZ's version the lines are blurred between good and evil. Right away what affects me is how much the protagonist and the antagonist are similar : JEAN DUJARDIN plays Pierre Michel, a father and husband named prosecuting judge of organized crime while GILLES LELOUCHE, plays Gaëtan Zampa, a father and husband, head of organized crime in Marseille. Although they are on different sides of the drug war, they share similar experiences of betrayal, murder, and ultimate loss. The characters are based on real people and real events but it must be noted that artistic liberties were taken with certain facts. For example the family of juge Michel recount that he never did have a gambling problem like the character in the movie.

The movie kept me fascinated from beginning to end. I found the actors on point with the characters they are playing and I truly enjoyed the views of the Old Port of Marseille. It is opening this week-end with French subtitles.

Dans les années 1970, la ville de Marseille est devenue l'exportatrice d'héroine #1 dans le monde avec les États-Unies comme plus gros client. En 1971 le réalisateur WILLIAM FRIEDKIN présente le film The French Connection avec GENE HACKMAN soulignant de la perspective Américaine avec un héros fou, le détective Popeye Doyle qui chassait les méchants férocement. 

Dans la version de CÉDRIC JIMENEZ les lignes entre le bien et le mal sont moins claires. Ce qui m'affecte tout de suite c'est comment le protagoniste et l'antagoniste se ressemblent:  JEAN DUJARDIN joue Pierre Michel, un père et un mari qui est nommé juge du grand banditisme alors que  GILLES LELOUCHE interprète Gaëtan Zampa, un père et un mari, chef du crime organisé à Marseille. Malgré qu'ils sont de côtés opposés dans la guerre des drogues, ils vivent des expériences similaires de trahisons, de meurtre, et de perte ultime. Il faut noter que les personnages sont basés sur des vrais personnes et que certaines facettes ont été traitées avec une liberté artistique qui ne respecte pas les faits. Par exemple la famille du juge Michel soutient qu'il n'a jamais eu de problème avec le jeu comme le suggère le film.

Le film m'a gardée fascinée du début à la fin. Je trouvais les acteurs d'aplomb avec leurs personnages et j'ai bien aimé les prises de vues du Vieux Port de Marseille. Le film ouvre en fin de semaine.

                                                               THE AGE OF ADALINE / ÉTERNELLE ADALINE


BLAKE LIVELY is Adaline Bowman, a young woman who stopped aging as the result of a freak
accident. I just adored this movie for so many reasons. ELLEN BURSTYN plays Adaline's daughter Flemming. In the scenes where they are together they are so believable and true to their characters of the aging daughter with an ageless but loving mother concerned for the well-being of her child.

This is a magical love story. Of course it stretches the imagination but it does so with such beauty. The cast is superb: MICHIEL HUISMAN is Ellis Jones, the man who finally conquers Adaline's fear of commitment, KATHY BAKER plays Ellis's mother with her usual ease, HARRISON FORD plays Ellis's dad who is also a former love interest of Adaline. The actors play off each other like a symphony. I congratulate ANGUS STRATHIE for the subdued elegance of the costume designs and Montrealer CLAUDE PARÉ for the production design. Their excellent work contributes to the enchanting aura of the movie that opens this Thursday.

BLAKE LIVELY est Adaline Bowman, une jeune femme qui a arrrêté de vieillir dû à un accident insolite. J'ai adoré ce film pour plusieurs raisons. ELLEN BURSTYN interprète la fille d'Adaline, Flemming. Dans les scènes qu'elles jouent ensembles elles sont tellemnt crédibles et honnêtes à leur personnage respectif d'une fille qui vieillie alors que sa mère malgré qu'éternellement jeune se soucis toujours pour son enfant. 

C'est une histoire d'amour enchantée. C'est officiel que cela met notre crédulité à l'épreuve, mais avec tant de beauté. La distribution est superbe: MICHIEL HUISMAN est Ellis Jones, l'homme qui conquiert finalement la peur d'aimer qu'a Adaline, KATHY BAKER joue la mère d'Ellis avec sa grâce habituelle, HARRISON FORD joue le père d'Ellis qui était l'amoureux d'Adaline quand il était jeune. Les comédiens jouent un sur l'autre comme une symphonie. Je dois féliciter ANGUS STRATHIE pour les costumes qui sont d'une élégance tamisée et le Montréalais CLAUDE PARÉ pour le design de la production. Leur excellent travail contribue à l'atmosphère surnaturelle du film qui ouvre ce Jeudi.

AROUND THE WORLD : TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (TIFF)

If you are a filmmaker you may want to submit a movie to the TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. The submissions have opened today and will be ongoing until July 6th 2015.

Regulations for the Competition 2015 (summary) 
1) Must be films completed after January 1st 2015.  
2) Should not have been screened at main competition section of “competitive feature film festivals (non-specialised)” 
accredited by FIAPF*1 prior to TIFF. 
3) Must have its Asian Premiere at TIFF. World and International Premieres are given priority. Japanese films must have its World Premiere. 
4) Must be feature films (including animation) running over 60 minutes. 
5) Documentary films are not eligible. 
6) Screening material should be in digital format (in high definition), with English subtitles. 
The application of these conditions belongs at the discretion of TIFF.

CAMP FIRES @ Musée McCord Museum 10.04. - 16.08.2015

The McCord Museum in Montreal has opened a new show that looks at the artistic production of three prolific ceramists from the Gay community. I mention their affiliation because Montreal is internationally known to be open to the LGBT community and many tourists come to the city to enjoy this rich diverse culture.

Artist LÉOPOLD L. FOULEM recounted his experience growing up gay in the 1970s when Catholicism held a tight reign on the mores of the province. This led to many negative experiences for him and there is a "camp" side to his subversive art that rebels against the prejudices he suffered. All three artists, the previously mentioned M. Foulem, PAUL MATHIEU and RICHARD MILETTE, have produced works of the highest standard of craftsmanship, then there are these tiny signs that these are not your mother's ceramic vases; the naked crotch of an anonymous man, a tea pot made like penis, icons of Pop culture revealing their homosexual preferences. This is not an art show for children and it may not be for all adults but it definitely speaks to Montreal's acceptance of humanity in all its colors.

L'artiste LÉOPOLD L. FOULEM a raconté ses expériences de jeune homme gay dans les années
1970 alors que le Catholicisme tenait un contrôle rigide sur les valeurs morales de la province. Ceci a mené à plusieurs expériences négatives pour lui d'où vient l'élément "camp" de son art subversif qui se rebelle contre les préjudices qu'il a subi. Chacun des artistes, le déjà mentionné M. Foulem, PAUL MATHIEU et RICHARD MILETTE, ont produit des oeuvres selon les plus haut standard de savoir-faire quand tout à coup apparaît ces petits indices que celles-ci ne sont pas les céramiques de votre mère; l'entrejambe nu d'un homme anonyme, une théière faite comme un pénis, des icônes de la culture Pop révélant leurs préférences homosexuelles. Ce n'est pas une exposition pour les enfants et peut-être pas non plus pour tous les adultes mais elle parle définitivement de l'acceptation que démontre Montréal pour l'humanité dans toutes ses couleurs.

MARION WAGSCHAL

PORTRAITS, MEMORIES, FABLES

This week we were waiting with anticipation to take a close-up look at the monumental paintings we could glimpse at through the glass door. This is MARION WAGSCHAL's first Museum exhibition and she told us how it was a full circle experience for her since she recalled that she had visited the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as a child and now, as an adult, she was the artist being exhibited. When we first see Ms Wagschal we are all stunned that this delicate woman could realize such huge honest canvases. On top of being a painter, she was an art teacher at Concordia University from where she retired recently. Her lifelong quest as artist and teacher was to raise awareness of the female painter. In her remarkable exhibition she demonstrates the strength of any of the great male painters combined with 100% female sensitivity and capacity for truth. She paints it like it is: intimate moments we can all relate to, moments of fatigue, family reunions, personal quirks, pets, are displayed before us in a soft earthly palette of colors. The paintings have the great quality of absorbing our attention while our brain is coming to terms with the subject matter that is at once familiar and foreign. 


The exhibition is a MUST SEE! There is a catalogue produced for the exhibition that is a fine addition to your personal library.

Cette semaine nous attendions avec anticipation l'opportunité de voir de près les pièces monumentales que l'on appercevait par la porte vitrée de la salle d'exposition. C'est la première exposition muséale de l'artiste Montréalaise  MARION WAGSCHAL. Elle nous a raconté que  la boucle était bouclée pour elle puisqu'elle se souvenait d'avoir visité le Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal quand elle était une jeune fille et que maintenant c'était elle l'artiste exposée. La première fois qu'on rencontre Madame Wagschal nous sommes étonnés qu'une femme si délicate pouvait réaliser des oeuvres aussi immenses et franches. En plus d'être peintre, elle a enseigné longtemps à l'Université Concordia d'où elle a pris sa retraite récemment. La quête de sa vie a été de  rehausser le statut de la femme peintre. Dans son exposition remarquable elle démontre autant de force que n'importe quel peintre masculin de renommé combinée avec 100% de sensibilité féminine et de capacité à exprimer la vérité. Elle le peint tel que c'est: des moments intimes auxquels nous possédons tous des références, les moments de fatigue, de réunions familiales, d'excentricité personnelle, les animaux domestiques, étalés dans une palette douce aux tons de terre. Les toiles possèdent la grande qualité d'absorber notre attention alors que notre cerveau tente de se réconcillier au sujet de l'oeuvre qui est à la fois famillier et étrange.

C'est une exposition À VOIR! Il y a aussi un catalogue qui accompagne l'expo qui sera une excellente addition à votre librairie.

The month of March was very busy on the Montreal cultural scene. But it is never too late to talk about the theatre and Montreal English Theatre was announcing the coming year's attractions.

ARTISTA is the mentorship program of Imago Theatre to empower Montreal's female youth January - April 2016.

The Creation Story of our Times

This is a sequence of images I took on June 14 2014. They were taken at an interval of 10 seconds between each take. The sequence numbers are IMG_9351-52-53-54 where IMG_9354 forms the last 3 images of the completed face of a woman with eyes filled with tears. The sequence belongs to the series of photographs I took where water was surrounded with books containing reproductions from art history's most famous Jesus portraits. I had put a note beside the bowl of water with the question: Who is Jesus of Nazareth?  What is extraordinary about this sequence is how you can see water building up the face beginning with the beautiful lips. The first 4 images from the left have been screened once, made lighter, the one with the total image, the fifth, is the one I chose as an Emerge Art, and the last image on the right has been colored for those who could not read the face otherwise. Every civilization has its creation story from which it derives value and meaning. Although our era is witnessing the erosion of cherished myths with a rise towards pragmatism, a new story is silently emerging from the current scientific discoveries and the discoveries of my artistic practice that is so hard to define. This last topic will be addressed in the future so we can look undisturbed at the evidence gathered so far by both disciplines.

It is vital to note that no belief system is being referred to here. The choice of the images used to demonstrate water's intelligence and communicative skills are based on the art history of the western world of the last two millennium that put a lot of emphasis on Christianity.

There is an intelligence at work in the universe and man has endeavored to connect with it since he became aware of it.

In February, an article was published in the French magazine SCIENCE & VIE detailing how scientists have proved the creative power of water. In the article, scientist JEAN-CHRISTOPHE BARET reminds us that the true classical discoveries of science are those arrived upon by accident, which is how he and his team: SYLVAIN LADAME, KAMEL MEGUELLATI, ALI FALLAH-ARAGHI, and CARLOS MARQUES: came upon the observation that water the size of a tiny drop or smaller held an incredible creative force. From what they have observed so far, they even proposed the hypothesis that life could have emerged on earth through the power held in the tiniest droplet of water. They also hypothesize, through their repeated observations, that the smaller the droplet the more intense its potency. The scientists conjectured that life could have begun in the sky where water is often in the form of tiny droplets.

The principle experiment speaks of the extra-dimensionality of water by observing that two molecules, aldehyde and amino acids, when put inside a three dimensional droplet stick to the inner wall of the droplet at a two-dimensional level from where they will fuse into a new compound. This is relevant to my hypothesis that Emerge Art is evidence of extra-dimensions. I outline this in an article I published on this blog on June 5th 2014 where I reference the same type of research as the Science & Vie article going on in the US: Emerge Art and the Theory of Extra-Dimension.

It is also intriguing that the scientists imagine life originating in the sky since our ancestors who believed in God placed Him in heaven.

There is an intelligence at work in the universe, what Einstein called the mind of God. Where scientists are studying the power inside a droplet of water, I am doing artistic studies on the action of water inside a bowl. The bowl is filled with a huge amount of droplets. In this quantity, water has the power to respond with visual symbols to what is going on around it in a way that is understandable to us. This extraordinary capacity of water to construct coherent forms also contributes to its role in the creation of life on earth and its diversity.

But that is not the whole story. Life cannot evolve anywhere without a relationship with Gravity. Gravity created water through its action starting at the Big Bang. Celestial mechanics influences the shape of living beings: The Phenomena of Evolution Captured, Amaryllis Sculpted by Gravitational Modulations: and Gravity clumps molecules together. So it appears logical that the first living cells would have formed within drops of water compelled by the action of Gravity as it acted on the drop of water.

Like the scientists, I have arrived at Emerge Art by accident. My work is ignored by all sides: scientific, artistic and metaphysical: at the moment because it makes many people hysterically blind; it shocks the worldview of those who are admitted skeptics and atheists; it drives scientists crazy even though they operate on the same basic "chance event" of observing water behaving in a way that was not expected; and finally not one major religion knows how to speak with nature the way Emerge Art has revealed her Spirit to me. This means our latest Creation Story, the one of our Times, will maintain securely the human propensity for arguing about who is right and who should win the coveted Leading-Worldview-Championship title. After all, humans commit genocide over worldviews!

The scientists will patent their water discoveries and monopolize our natural resource, our life source, for corporate gains, the one current international value that proclaims silently that we are allowed, or they ( the government ) are allowed, to do anything for money. As for the art/religion of our Creation Story, it is, for the time being, swallowed up by "concerns for the environment" that are totally oblivious to the Spirit that inhabits our planet. So we will have to wait to get a picture of this side of our developing tale. Perhaps this is why the beautiful woman in the water has eyes full of tears.

The exterior must also blend with the natural culture of the environment and its inhabitants.

This exhibition was curated by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen ( Brussels ), Juan Josersten Geers ( Zurich ) and SO-IL ( New York ). They went over the Canadian Centre for Architecture's archives of ÁBALOS & HERREROS, a Spanish firm no longer operating, with the dare to create a puzzle for the visitor so he could apprehend how architects use them. So as you first enter the room you are confronted with a series of images, plans, installations that appear meaningless but as you let your eyes see the pieces, patterns emerge that reveal how new technology allows the architects to use the archives to work out design issues on new projects. There is a handbook that accompanies the exhibition that you can bring with you to help you figure out what is in front of you. This is the first of a three part series focussing on the recently acquired archives and how architects use them. At the exit there is a wall that will resume each of the three parts to help the visitor understand archives even better.

Le projet industriel offre un défi unique aux architectes car les édifices doivent posséder la fonctionnalité des entreprises qui les habitent et à la fois doivent créer un lieu où le travail est agréable et productif. Les commissaires de cette exposition sont OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen ( Bruxelle ), Juan Josersten Geers ( Zurich ) et SO-IL ( New York ). Ils ont fouillé les archives du Centre Canadien d'Architecture de ÁBALOS & HERREROS une firme Espagnole qui n'est plus en opération, en relevant le  challenge de créer un puzzle pour les visiteurs pour qu'ils puissent comprendre comment les architectes les utilisent. Donc dès que vous entrez dans la salle d'exposition vous êtes confrontés à des séries d'images, de plans, et d'installations qui peuvent vous paraître insensés mais plus vous regardez les pièces vous constatez qu'un motif émerge qui révèle comment les architectes se servent des nouvelles technologies pour travailler avec les archives. Il y a un livret qui accompagne l'exposition qui pourra vous aidez à figurer ce qui est devant vous. Ceci est la première exposition d'une série de trois qui se concentre sur ces archives nouvellement acquises par le CCA et comment les architectes s'en servent. À la sortie il y a un mur qui résumera chacune des trois expositions pour permettre aux visiteurs de comprendre les archives encore mieux.
