With a group, I visited the exhibition IMAGINE BRAZIL @ DHC/ART with curator Cheryl Sim. She introduced the project by describing the background of this mysterious country situated in an equally mysterious continent. Originally the land was populated with indigenous tribes. In 1500 colonialism began with Portugal sending ships and people to harvest all the riches of the territory from gold to sugar cane plants. To assist them in the raping of the continent, they enslaved the natural inhabitants and imported African slaves. The Christian religion also arrived to add to the torture of the people by destroying their myths and their Gods. Almost 600 years later, the Brazilian citizen is from very mixed background where the color of the skin plays a serious role in the fate of any individual. So how to tap into the artistic expressions of this country divided into four major geographical regions?

The four curators: Gunnar B. Kvaran, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Thierry Raspail and Cheryl Sim devised a game to build up the narrative of the exhibition. You will find the rules of the game in the bright yellow folder at the entrance of DHC/ART. What struck me is the explanation by Cheryl Sim and what I saw in the exhibition: a total indifference to art history. This is perhaps the most intriguing element of the art because it does not bother with all the ancient cultures and their civilizations and religions. It addresses the now of the artists making the work. The result is so revealing. It is direct, totally different yet familiar. I enjoyed the whole show with mesmerizing video installations, paintings, sculptures, and artist books.
