The spring before the official opening of the Montreal Biennale, we are invited to view the work in progress. This year the curator, Philippe Pirotte, wanted to remind us that art is also about objects, that those creations are fetishes that we need to possess. Philosophically, the curator wants to remind us that being alive is also an opportunity to experience pleasure. He is collaborating with a comity that includes artist Corey McCorkle, art historian Aseman Sabet and curator Kitty Scott to name a few. Some of the artists have been chosen but the selection is not yet completed. The one that caught my eye is Nijideka Akunyili Crosby. One of the great pleasures of the Biennale is, of course, to exchange points of view and name favorites. There will be a lot to choose from!

•Au printemps précédant l'ouverture de la Biennale de Montréal, nous sommes invités à voir l'avancement du projet. Le commissaire de cette édition, Philippe Pirotte, voulait nous rappeler que l'art est une affaire d'objets, que ses créations sont des fétiches dont nous avons le besoin de posséder. Philosophiquement, le commissaire voulait nous rappeler qu'être vivant est aussi une opportunité pour jouir des plaisirs qui s'offrent à nos sens. Il collabore avec un comité qui inclus l'artiste Corey McCorkle, l'historienne de l'art Aseman Sabet et la commissaire Kitty Scott pour en nommer quelques-uns. Certains artistes ont été choisis mais la sélection n'est pas complétée. Celle qui a capturée mon attention est Nijideka Akunyili Crosby. Un des grands plaisirs de la Biennale est, bien sur, d'échanger nos points de vue et de nommer nos favoris. Nous pourrons choisir parmi plusieurs!

The Montreal English Theatre community got together this past week to introduce the upcoming shows by independent theatre companies for us. I was happy to see that the women of Quebec theatre are stronger than ever and that diversity is celebrated here. Here is a sample of the line-up:

The Black Theatre Workshop : Angélique by Lorena Gale - the true story of a negro slave girl executed in Montreal for having set the city on fire in 1734. Bluenose by Emil Sher - a music filled play for young audiences, explores difference and acceptance from the perspective of a group of zany pirates. Find out about the company's Artist Mentorship Program if you are a young artist.

Geordie Productions : School Tours: Water Weight by Jesse Stong - a magical adventure around a swimming pool. Instant by Erin Shields - a lightning-speed, multi-narrative story about three teenagers who are trying to be heard. Mainstage: The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury - an epic journey into the Undiscovered Country to find the hidden secrets of Halloween and to save Joe Pipkin.

Hudson Village Theatre : 60's Spotlight Show - Ladies Foursome by Norm Foster- Private Lives by Noël Coward- The Double adapted from Dostoevsky's The Double.

Imago Theatre : An Intractable Woman by Stefano Massini - a story about the inalienable right to freedom of expression.
