• The first impression I got when I walked in 1700 LA POSTE for the Jean-Pierre Laroque exhibition was that of being in an antiquities exhibition like we see at civilization museums. What appear to be busts, equines and characters sculptures look like they have just been dug out of an archeological site. It is a once strongly familiar and equally alien. You have the impression the objects are made of a stained ochre marble. They are actually made of clay and baked into fine ceramic pieces of intricate and fascinating details.

• Jean-Pierre Laroque is a soft spoken man that is easy to talk with. He has had a very individualistic journey as an artist and he is better known internationally than here in Montreal where he has exhibited only a few times.

• I screened the Bruno Boulianne documentary about the artist Jean-Pierre Larocque Le Fusain et L'Argile. In the movie the artist talks about his private life, we see him in his atelier creating and people who collaborated with him through the years reveal even more about the man, his life and his work. He loves humble materials like clay, chalk and charcoal, ink and paper. He approach his medium with abandon and spontaneity and it is magical to observe how his spirit moves from one idea to the next as he adds or erases the materials that will reveal a completed piece. The film, sponsored by La Fondation Internationale Isabelle de Mévius,  will be projected until June 23 2019 @ 1700 LA POSTE starting on Wednesday through Sunday between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

• His spontaneous drawings surround us throughout the exhibition. Mostly they are black and white multidimensional images that again transcend a specific epoch. The exhibition is also accompanied by a catalog featuring a foreword by Isabelle de Mévius and essays by David Elliott and Edward Lebow.

• Meanwhile the 37th International Festival of Films on Art has begun this week and will have a few presentations of the movie. In

Montreal on March 22 and 30, and in Quebec on March 23 at 4:00 PM.
