English Below

CARL SANDBURG

I saw one movie in English: The Day Carl Sandburg Died directed by Paul Bonesteel. The only thing I ever knew about CARL SANBURG is when I saw a photograph where he is sitting on a sofa with MARILYN MONROE and under the photo it says Marilyn Monroe with Carl Sandberg. I so enjoyed discovering this brilliant man that was a poet, a journalist, a television commentator, and an advisor to American Presidents like FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT and JOHN F. KENNEDY. I enjoyed his poetry that is concise with rich imagery of an America that is lost forever. Among his great accomplishments there is a huge biography of President ABRAHAM LINCOLN, and one work I am happy he did, he preserved the folk songs poor Americans would chant during some of that nation's harshest times.

FIFA English Films

Vivian Maier self-portrait
I saw two movies about two EXTRAORDINARY female photographers: VIVIAN MAIER and ROBYN BEECHE.

The first is a totally mysterious woman who worked as a nanny in the Chicago of the 1950's and 1960's: Vivian Maier: Who Took Nanny's Pictures? This woman who lived mostly behind the scene of her time nonetheless captured the most striking photographs of the people around her, of the landscape, the city scape. I adored the incredible cast of characters she shot, street people, the elderly, the lowdown  and downtrodden and the families. Some of her stills are self-portraits. We get a hint of who she may have been through these brilliantly composed yet enigmatic images.

Divine photographed by Robyn Beeche

The second woman shot the MOST colorful and inventive photos of the 1980's London with its wild cast of characters like LEIGH BOWERY and DIVINE to name a few, and who is now pursuing a lifelong project to document her beloved India where she has been residing for more than 25 years: A Life Exposed: Robyn Beeche. This movie is so esthetically delicious, you MUST take some time to see it on the big screen at this wonderful festival. You can follow the link in the left column for more information about the programming.

FIFA Jour 1 / Day 1

ENGLISH BELOW

Georg Baselitz is one of the greatest living abstract artist of our times. In this movie, in German with English subtitles, he takes us with him and his wife into his studio where the pair is preparing an important show for the New York Gagosian Gallery.

NYMPH()MANIAC & DIVERGENT

FRANÇAIS lien de traduction colonne de gauche
CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG
NYMPH()MANIAC

Joe, a nymphomaniac played by CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG, is found unconscious in a dark alley by Seligman, a single man who is still a virgin played by Stellan Skarsgård. Writer Director LARS VON TRIER takes us inside the life of a person afflicted by nymphomania. I say afflicted because a nymphomaniac is preoccupied with sex in a far more destructive way than a woman who has a huge sex drive, or a whore or prostitute. The nymphomaniac will destroy everything in her life starting with her own body. We see the progression of her syndrome from the moment Joe, at this stage played by STACY MARTIN, coldly addresses the issue of getting deflowered so she can begin consuming men. Young, healthy and beautiful, she has no problems enjoying abundant sexual encounters. One day, she cannot reach orgasm anymore and will go down an ever dangerous path in an attempt to get one.

The movie, divided in two volumes, is very sexual. For the North American version, there is one hour and thirty minutes edited out of the two volumes and still it is a very graphic movie. We may be tempted to snicker at the subject matter but I believe Lars von Trier did as good a job as any to look objectively at all the implications of nymphomania as much for the person suffering from it as the trail of destruction in its wake. The medical research is ongoing as to how to classify the disorder. The movie is in English with French subtitles.

DIVERGENT

A futuristic scenario of what is left of civilization trying to rebuild a working society, Divergent is based on the best selling novel by VERONICA ROTH. The producers of the movie call it a mix between THE MATRIX and THE HUNGER GAMES. People are divided in factions designed to put individuals in the groups where they will be their most efficient to serve the whole community. But there are those who are more adaptable and cannot be characterized so simply, they are the divergents, to be killed as soon as they are identified so as not to disrupt the delicate balance of the still struggling new society.

Tris, played beautifully by SHAILENE WOODLEY, is a secret divergent living in the Abnegation faction, the missionaries, as the movie opens. But she is drawn to the excitement of the Dauntless faction, the warriors. She switches faction to the Dauntless and there forms a strong alliance with Four, THEO JAMES. The story is fast paced. I loved the excellent scenes of parkour, the style of set and costumes, the atmosphere is brilliantly translated, and you will be surprised by one of the greatest movie rides in cinematic history when the Divergent faction celebrates a win by gliding on a rope that weaves through the entire city. SPECTACULAR!

Both movies open this March 21 2014

JOHN CHERVINSKY / RON LORANGER / GILLES BOISVERT

The Hand of Man / John Chervinsky

Français plus bas

Although the weather has not warmed up that much, I enjoyed walking to a few art galleries this past Saturday. I began at YOUN Gallery where JOHN CHERVINSKY and RON LORANGER had an opening.

John Chervinsky is a physicist and a self-taught photographer based at Harvard University. The works presented in Montreal come from two important series: «An Experiment in Perspective» and «Studio Physics». Most of the photographs presented were black and white. The work explores themes of a metaphysical nature with objects put into relationship with each other in space. The space is then given perspective with lines, contrasts and motifs.

Perplexe / Ron Loranger
Ron Loranger is a Toronto based artist who is seeking mastery over the delicate art of water colors. The exhibition shown here presents his «blobettes» that represent mini universes evolving in color and contrasted with text and symbols of daily life.

The exhibition will last until April 13 2014.

Then I visited GILLES BOISVERT at Bernard Gallery. Although I caught the exhibit on its last week, you can see his work at Bernard Gallery if you inquire. His work combines his own photographs of the ocean with a background of abstract forms and colors. He is interested in unifying the movement of the wave with the movement of the paint.

EMERGE ART the world premiere / la première mondiale

This tiny vignette manifested in a bowl of water on December 25 2013. It reminds me of my brother Joe Ghio who died November 15 2010. On the left, the original crop, on the right, the polished Emerge Art.
On June 11 2011, I published a video on youtube about how the sky reacted to my prayer that my brother go to heaven.

I am getting ready to launch the first ever Emerge Art exhibit in the world. It is a daunting experience to present art that revolutionizes all we know and accept about science, politics and religion. I find resistance everywhere. It has always been the domain of art to take humanity further. We advance in the daring steps of the true artists whose works pick us up when we are down, carry us through when we think we have reached our limits, and help us know our souls, our minds, and even the inconceivable.

more details
When an art form is revolutionary, it is never already included in the institutions of art: the gallery, the museum, the university or the art school. These institutions appropriate innovations after they have cracked the current worldview.  Although specialists of many discipline run them, these individuals are not creators, they act more like civil servants because they are bound by constraints the artist is not bound to, except, of course, the need to eat and find shelter.

Emerge Art reveals a facet of nature that is universally dismissed in our contemporary world that is said to be pragmatic. But we do have souls and our souls seek oneness with that which is greater. Emerge Art is not a belief, it is evidence. I enjoy the objective approach of the scientist even if my mind and heart remain open to infinite possibilities including that of seeing a reflection of my deceased brother’s face in a bowl of water on Christmas Day.

I admit that the actions water has taken since July 23 2013 is a mystery. So much is at stake for us as inhabitants of this Earth, and as individuals who need self-actualization. Water, the source of life on this planet, appears to be reaching out, attempting to communicate at a level we can relate to. This is a wondrous thing.
