On June 6 2013, I was invited to the Canadian Centre for Architecture to visit the new exhibition Dissections with Vancouver-based artist GEOFFREY SMEDLEY. It is in effect a uniquely complex installation of four sculptural works. Inspired by RENÉ DESCARTES this series regroups the mechanized works around the theme of the CLOWN. As Geoffrey Smedley tells us "... each piece is an organ of the Clown, the human becoming mechanized." There is Escapement, the organ of endurance, for example. A complex piece that repeats a completely useless motion over and over.
To accompany the exhibition there is an intriguing catalogue by the same name Dissections. It is perfectly square, black, with white font. The catalogue becomes another "object" instead of merely a book with text. I love that it features many photos of the artists work. And then there are the texts. Sometimes I found myself in philosophical musings, other times I felt I was reading a macabre short story à la EDGAR ALLEN POE. I love that the articles are one page each. This makes it the ideal table book.
FABRIZIO GALLANTI curated the exhibition that will be showing until August 11 2013.
