A stunningly colorful series of exhibitions opened this January at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. We felt every emotion in the human spectrum from awe and enchantment, to grief and loss to the beauty of love in all its forms! I begin with CHAGALL, the extraordinarily prolific Russian artist who was a contemporary to the likes of Picasso and Fernand Léger.

The first thing that struck my eyes was the dramatic scenography that serpents across the exhibition taking us through all the major stages of the artist's production. Then there is the musical quality of his art and the undertones of jewish mythology and folklore.

There is an excellent catalog that will allow you to take the exhibition home and go even deeper into the artists work

• Une série d'expositions étonnamment colorées ont vu le jour ce janvier au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal.  Nous avons ressenti toutes les émotions du spectrum humain de la stupeur à l'émerveillement, de la peine à la perte jusqu'à la beauté de l'amour sous toutes ses formes! Je commence avec CHAGALL, l'artiste Russe extraordinairement prolifique qui était un contemporain de Picasso et Fernand Léger.

La première chose qui frappe mon oeil est la scénographie dramatique qui serpente autour de l'exposition qui nous fait revivre les étapes majeures de la production de l'artiste. Ensuite il y a la qualité musicale de son art avec ses nuances de mythologie juive et folklore.

L'exposition est accompagnée d'un excellent catalogue qui va vous permettre d'emmener l'exposition avec vous à la maison et d'approfondir encore plus l'oeuvre de l'artiste.

Nathalie Bondil, Chief Curator and Director of the Museum, was visibly moved when she recounted her decision to expose the works of the late French Moroccan  artist Leila Alaoui who lost her life in a terrorism attack on January 15 2016 in Burkina Faso. Ms Bondil had first considered the work of the young woman in context with a recent exhibition on Orientalism, but had found the serious subject matter of Alaoui's art out of synch with the mood of that particular exhibition. This deepened her sadness on the night of the opening where friends and family members, with tears in their eyes, could only share memories of her instead of cheers with her. Alaoui's work is about the tragic human condition of the Moroccan refugees in limbo as they cannot go back and are denied access to anywhere they could begin to live again.

• Nathalie Bondil, Commissaire en chef et Directrice du Musée, était visiblement émue quand elle a raconté sa décision d'exposer l'oeuvre de l'artiste Française Marocaine  Leila Alaoui qui a perdu la vie dans une attaque terroriste le 15 janvier 2016 au Burkina Faso. Madame Bondil avait considéré l'oeuvre de la jeune femme lors d'une exposition récente sur l'Orientalisme, à ce moment, le sujet sérieux de l'oeuvre d'Alaoui était en désaccord avec la tonalité de cette exposition particulière. Ceci avait approfondi son chagrin le soir du vernissage où la famille et les amis de l'artiste, les larmes aux yeux, ne pouvaient que partager leurs souvenirs d'elle au lieu de lever un verre en sa compagnie. L'oeuvre d'Alaoui illustre les conditions humaines tragiques des réfugiés Marocains emprisonnés dans les limbes d'où ils ne peuvent ni reculer ni avancer.

If you need uplifting this week, and I am betting you do, take a stroll though this delightful exhibition featuring the works of Jacques Nadeau, photographer for Le Devoir, and Mikaël Theimer of Portraits de Montréal who present us with portraits of LOVE in all its forms and colors! It is so good to see people loving each other and thriving in our peaceful city. Marie-Christine Ladouceur-Girard instigated this magical project!
