PETER DOIG
NULLE TERRE ÉTRANGÈRE 25 Janvier - 4 Mai 2014
NO FOREIGN LANDS January 25 - May 4 2014Français plus bas
As you arrive on top of the stairs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the palette of vibrant colors used by PETER DOIG in his immense,
misty canvases suddenly arouses your senses. In his steamy world there are no
women only water, bodies of water, haze. There are men traveling in groups in
rowboats, resting in rowboats or playing on the beach.

I asked Peter Doig how he would
characterize his style. Although he will not say 100% that it is expressionist,
he said he certainly does feel a kinship between his work and that style. “ I
paint landscapes with things in the back.” The artist is much traveled and it
is his intention that the work reflects how various locals inspired his
canvases. He is also influenced by the weather and how it changes the landscape.
The results are quite appealing to the eye and the soul. The exhibition ends
with a display of his work process and how he evolved as a painter.

» L’artiste a beaucoup voyagé

Ce livre me
performance dramatique Action Pants : Genital Panic, 1969.

ENGLISH
An open book and a bowl of water
are the tangible objects of the photograph entitle P. 249, also an Emerge Art.
The book is Extrême: Esthétiques
de la limite dépassée written by French art critic Paul Ardenne. On the left
page is a photo of Austrian artist Valie Export in her unforgettable
performance Action Pants: Genital Panic, 1969. Her intention was to decry the
objectification of women in pornographic movies. Her stunning exploit was to
walk into a triple X movie theatre armed with a machine gun, wearing a pair of
pants cut open at the crotch to confront voyeuristic men deep in their
ritualized consumption of porn with subsequent self-pleasuring.
She asked some of the patrons to
look at her exposed vagina so they could see what a real one looked like. Many
men ran away from her.
The Emerge Art is the image rising
up in the bowl of water. An unexplained phenomenon at this point, the Emerge
Art presented above clearly reflects Valie Export’s message.
There are three main scenarios in
the water. On the left, in the shade, a crisscross motif that shapes many faces
culminates in the center as one shadowy but clearly visible male face. The man
is in the dark, riveted by an ephemeral female torso on the right. His
countenance is gaunt with thin down turned lips and sunken cheeks. He looks
sick which is what Valie Export is intimating at with her performance.
The torso on the right is youthful
and well formed with firm full breasts, a slender waist and a firm abdomen.
Shaded areas on the torso suggest the motion of undressing. There is no face,
no arms, no hands and no legs. Another reflection of what bothers Valie Export:
men obsessed with porn abstract the female face so as not to be distracted from
the role she is given in this context, that of being a sexual machine, to be
used and consumed without empathy or concern, the reasoning being that, after
all, she is getting paid for this public debasement.
In the center, of the bowl of
water, a tiny silhouette of a shapely woman, with arms and legs, stands in a
lighted portion of a city street evoking the streetwalker and also Valie Export
as she arrives to the triple X cinema with her machine gun.
The content of P. 249 is a
powerful Yin Yang motif. The book, the words and the photograph of Valie
Export’s performance form the dominant Yang portion, masculine and fiery,
undeniably real. The bowl of water is the Yin portion, feminine and receptive,
inconceivable. Like a womb the water inside the bowl is inseminated and
produces images that mirror the subject matter of the Yang object.
P. 249 is conflicting to the
intellect. Is the feminine condition the subject of the piece? Is it the
endless battles of the sexes? Or is it the inconceivable phenomenon of water
expressing cognition?

Eva Brandl BIRDS OF PREY they own the night / they own the day January 6–February 14, 2014
![]() |
| For Information |
EVA BRANDL
Birds of Prey
They own the night/
They own the day
Eva Brandl’s intent, to arouse a
mnemonic experience of space, has succeeded for me.
I am standing in the doorway
assessing the contents inside the exhibition hall. A combination of sounds, digital
prints and sculptural objects fill the space. My first phenomenological
reaction to the installation is that of a long ago buried memory of being in a
fabric store with my mother as a child.
The intent of my presence there
was to find a work I could describe in detail but it didn’t quite work out that
way. I was involved with the total content as one piece. I zeroed in on a work
entitled Curtain Wall. It is a sculptural object that looks like rows of
fabric, as you would find them in a fabric store. The piece is composed of
cardboard tubes held up by tripods and covered with chamois leather.
I go deeper inside the memory
being evoked. I can almost see my mother hovering over the fabrics she desired,
touching them, evaluating her budget, imagining what she would conjure up with
it, where her creation would be in her universe: a dress at a social event, a
curtain in her kitchen, chairs covered to look new again? As a child, I was
bored and exasperated waiting after her so I could be taken out of this heavy
obsolete place.
The exhibition is accompanied by
huge digital prints of taxidermy birds of prey with eyes firmly set upon their
kill. Of course they are looking right at you as you move in the
space. I was still in the fabric store with my mother so for me they became
curtains, couches, and bedspreads.
I listened to the howl sounds as I
stood between two cones a large stunned bird looking at me. But I felt the
deadness of the animal. These are taxidermy animals, the hoots are a recording,
I am bemused that memories from my childhood resurface to consciousness like
ancient artifacts in the desert because of the juxtaposition of the objects.

HOW ARCHITECTS, EXPERTS, POLITICIANS, INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES, AND CITIZENS NEGOTIATE MODERN PLANNING: CASABLANCA CHANDIGRAH From 26 November 2013 to 20 April 2014 @ CCA
One of the most inspiring
exhibitions I have seen in years! Since I visit the Canadian Center for
Architecture I am more and more amazed at the work of architects. I had never
realized how much a great architect needed to know and consider about a region
and its inhabitants.
Co-curators TOM AVERMAETE, a
Professor of Architecture at the TU Delft, and MARISTELLA CASCIATO, Associate
Director of Research at the CCA, combined their efforts to bring us through the
elaborate process of urban renewal in two distinct regions: Casablanca in
Morocco and Chandigarh in India. As they accompanied us through the exhibition
they explained that their concept was inspired by the need to provide us with
models for our contemporary urban renewal concerns.
The co-curators used the works of
world-renowned architects: MICHEL ÉCOCHARD and his team in Casablanca, LE
CORBUSIER, PIERRE JEANNERET, MAXWELL FRY and JANE DREW plus local architects in
Chandigarh to demonstrate the methods employed by the UN in the 1950s to
revitalize regions that were in serious urban decay. The idea of modernism is
the inspiration behind the creation of a “ new” urbanism that is flourishing to
this day in those cities.
I began my visit sitting at a
round table, reading a text by Ernest Weissmann, Director of Centre for Housing
Building and Planning. The title of the document is: THE URBAN CRISIS Its
Meaning for Development from the UN Monthly Chronicle. I found the texts reproduced for the
exhibition enormously enlightening. The installation provides good insight on
how the above-mentioned professionals bring together ideas that will change the
daily lives of so many. I looked at a series of booklets under the title
Village Problem. Each one outlined a serious problem faced by the community,
its causes, and strategies to find solutions.
Almost every problem that was
addressed began with the people having lost their motivation and appreciation
for the various benefits of a good standard of living. Whether it was sanitary
water, well kept houses, roads, even eating healthy foods. These are the same
issues faced by communities today. In the worst slums, people have lost the
desire to regenerate their environment because the greater mass of the
inhabitants is simply not motivated for one reason or another.

The other element of the
exhibition I found very informative is the presentation board used by the
architects to present the accumulated data to the UN. Again the extraordinary
attention to every facet of human life, from the shopping mart to the places of
worship, gave me an occasion to reflect on my own issues within a larger
context.
du Centre for Housing Building and Planning. Le titre du document est: THE
URBAN CRISIS Its Meaning for Development from the UN Monthly Chronicle.

Julianne Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts
|
Opening this Friday January 10 2014, this movie is all about the craft of acting. The cast is superb: MERYL STREEP, JULIA ROBERTS, IWAN McGREGOR, CHRIS COOPER, ABIGAIL BRESLIN, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, JULIETTE LEWIS, MARGO MARTINDALE, JULIANNE NICHOLSON and more. It is a very dark comedy but it is strangely evocative of the dysfunction that affects any family in the world. Secrets and lies are revealed and many hearts are broken. Benedict Cumberbatch is excellent in his portrayal of a timid adult. I just love Margo Martindale anytime I see her, she never disappoints. Of course the two stars, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, are equal to their reputations and provide an emotion packed exchange between mother and daughter as they attempt to forge some kind of bond. This film is produced by GEORGE CLOONEY.
