TRAILER

The third installment of THE DIVERGENT series, ALLEGIANT, finds Tris, SHAILENE WOODLEY, and Four, THEO JAMES in conflict with the new situation in Chicago where Evelyn, NAOMI WATTS, now rules. Johanna, played by OCTAVIA SPENCER stands in direct opposition to Evelyn over the rulership of the ruined city. Tris and Four plan to go over the wall with a few others in an attempt to find a better solution than the ones proposed by the competing ruler.

The story itself is not unique. Good guys and bad guys are in a fight for survival. However I really loved the technological inventions illustrated in the film. These are revealed once they are across the wall, where they meet David, JEFF DANIELS, at the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. For me this was the best part of the movie in terms of surprising unfoldment.

THE PROGRAM

Starring BEN FOSTER as Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France American cyclist who was dishonored after confessing to doping during seven consecutive races where he was the World Champion. It is a very interesting thriller about how the need for glory and significance can lead people astray. David Walsh, CHRIS O'DOWD, an Irish sports journalist working for the British newspaper The Sunday Times grew suspicious of Lance Armstrong's sudden unexplainable victories. Adding to his suspicion were the consecutive wins for seven years in a row. In this story, Lance Armstrong goes to such lengths to maintain his shameful secret it blows the mind! Meanwhile he is collecting millions upon millions from his sponsors. It is also very sad because he has three children that were witness to his international downfall.

THE KNIGHT OF CUPS

A TERRENCE MALICK movie starring CHRISTIAN BALE, CATE BLANCHETT, NATALIE PORTMAN and BRIAN DENNEHY to name a few of the faces you will see in this unusual film. We follow Rick, Bale, from scenery to scenery as the narration goes on and on. He appears to question the meaning of life as he searches for God or his father, it is not clear. This is not a movie for everyone. It is closer to contemporary art films that the usual types you will see at a theatre. Even the mostly white noise background music evokes the art film genre. In this sense, the soundtrack provided by HANAN TOWNSHEND works beautifully. What kept me going is the fabulous cinematography by EMMANUEL LUBEZKI and the relentlessly fabulous homes illustrated throughout! The splendor of these decor kept me mesmerized.

THE LOBSTER

Starring a plump COLLIN FARRELL as David a man who is once again single and goes to The Hotel in The City to find true love. However if the patrons of The Hotel do not find true love within 45 days, they will be turned into animals. David chooses to be turned into a lobster should he fail. RACHEL WEISZ becomes his love interest after he is unable to make a love connection and escapes. It is a brilliant satire on modern love and modern expectations of what love should be. The result is a constant subdued humor that takes us by surprise because of its absurdity like when the character who always had cookies with her threw herself out a window and someone comments: "There was a lot of blood...and cookies."

Je connais son nom depuis mon enfance. Icone du cinéma Français et beau avec son regard intense plein de mystère! Ce film m'a tellement appris de chose sur cet homme qui a souffert et triomphé à tour de rôle. Je n'aurais jamais pensé qu'il était un solitaire, par example. Je n'avais jamais su qu'il avait eu une sérieuse relation avec la très belle et tragique ROMY SCHNEIDER. C'est un film captivant que j'ai adoré!

Tout le monde sait que Marlon Brando est le summum de ce qu'un acteur peut accomplir comme artiste. Il est décédé en 2004. En 2005 je me suis rendue à New York. J'ai visité la célèbre boîte de ventes aux enchères Chistie's qui était située au 20 Rockfellar Plaza. Ils présentaient les possessions de Marlon Brando qui étaient mis aux enchères pour sa famille. Il y avait beaucoup de livres à vendre, certains livres qui étaient en sa possession depuis plus de trente ans. Un de ceux-ci l'avait aidé à créer son personnage dans Mutiny on the Bounty. Il savait TOUT sur l'île où a eu lieu le tournage: de la géographie à la politique aux croyances spirituelles et la température! J'ai vu la lettre que lui a écrit MARIO PUZO dans laquelle il demandait à l'acteur de jouer le rôle Don Vito Corleone, Le Parrain.
Je découvre aussi qu'il était dyslexique, comme moi!

C'est un film délicieux qui m'a captivée du début à la fin! On y voit un artiste complexe et troublé pour qui la réussite n'avait plus de sens.

This coming Sunday morning, March 13th and then on March 20th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts you can see this splendid movie on the life of my favorite renaissance artist MICHELANGELO MERISI da CARAVAGGIO. The movie walks us through his life, takes us inside the buildings where he lived and worked, the roads he traveled and recreates famous scenes of his life though realistic comic book style images. The film is produced by Jean-Michel Meurice, who is an artist and filmmaker, with the collaboration of Sybille Ebert-Schifferer, Michel Laclotte and Michel Hilaire. They reveal new discoveries made in recent years because of dedicated art historians about the long neglected work of this passionate man! It is just a gorgeous film that will allow you to see many great paintings up close.

VINCENT WARREN

UN HOMME DE DANSE

This Friday the 11th of March, I went to the special presentation of the movie in the presence of VINCENT WARREN, the featured dancer in this documentary produced by MARIE BRODEUR founder of comarie.ca. There were many dancers present for the screening with the delighted crowd. The film is structured on M. Warren's moving from one apartment to another, a move that had been scheduled slightly before Ms Brodeur contacted him about making the film. Ms Brodeur told us she saw an opportunity to follow the various phases of M. Warren's wonderful and sometimes tragic life as he boxed his possessions from room to room. This proved a very successful and moving strategy. Thanks to our developing technologies we can see footage of the dancer from almost every phase of his career. I adored it! People interviewed in the movie all loved the charming artist and I am telling you, he is one of the most delightful person I have ever met. You will have 2 more chances to see this jewel: Monday March 14th at the CCA and Sunday March 20th at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts .

• Ce vendredi le 11 mars, je me suis rendue à la présentation spéciale du film en présence de VINCENT WARREN, l'artiste illustré dans ce documentaire de MARIE BRODEUR, fondatrice de  comarie.ca. Plusieurs danseurs et danseuses étaient présents au visionnement ainsi qu'une foule enchantée. Le film est structuré sur le déménagement de M. Warren d'un appartement du troisième étage à un autre au rez de chaussée. Ce déplacement avait été cédulé peu avant que Mme Brodeur le contacte au sujet du film. Mme Brodeur nous a dit qu'elle a tout de suite reconnu une opportunité de suivre les différentes phases de la vie illustre et quelquefois tragique du danseur alors qu'il emboîtait ses possessions de pièce en pièce. Ceci c'est avérée une réussite stratégique et touchante. Grâce à nos technologies toujours en évolution, nous pouvons voir des séquences du danseur à presque toutes les étapes de sa carrière. J'ai adoré! Les gens interviewer dans le film racontent tous comment ils aimaient ce charmant artiste. Et je vous le dis, c'est une des personnes les plus sympathiques que j'ai croisées. Vous avez encore deux chances de voir ce bijoux: lundi le 14 mars au CCA et dimanche le 20 mars au  Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal

The Young Messiah is based on ANNE RICE 's  novel "Christ 
the Lord: Out of Egypt." It stars ADAM GREAVES-NEAL as the young Jesus, SEAN BEAN as the centurion Severus who must hunt the boy down for the unworthy Herod played by JONATHAN BAILEY. I have grown up hearing stories of Jesus performing miracles. For most of us, miracles are just tales, that is why books like Harry Potter fascinate us; we wonder what it must be like to witness the miraculous. The beauty of this film is in the detailed way it re-creates the time; the roads lined with crucified men, the roman centurions menacing the unruly, the countryside with delicate flowers and waterfalls and pools of fresh water. It is a very eloquent film that does not ask you to adhere to any religious view points but rather lets you wonder about the possibilities.

The Legend of Barney Thompson is a mad story of dark humor and murder! EMMA THOMPSON is magnificent as Cemolina, an eighty year old sex fiend who is the mum of Barney Thompson, a repressed bachelor who complains about everything at his job at the barber shop and doesn't know anything about his mother's secret life. Events are about to take Barney, played brilliantly by ROBERT CARLYLE, down a gruesome road with no end in sight. RAY WINSTONE is hilarious as obsessed DCI Holdall who can't get things right because of his nemesis Detective Inspector June Robertson played by ASHLEY JENSEN. Here is a sample of the humor that cracked me up: a goofy looking character has seen the body in Barney's car and tries to blackmail him. He sets up a meeting at the children's carousel in the park. As they are going round and round, the only two adults on the game, Barney asks him why he set up the meeting there. The goofy looking man answered that if he came alone he would look like a pedophile. "Now we look like 2 pedophiles don't we?" replies Barney.

Only Yesterday, the 1991 masterpice by ISAO TAKAHATA from the renowned STUDIOS GHIBLI will be presented at  Cinéma du Parc - starting this March 18 2016. The story is simple enough; an adult young woman is remembering a time when she was 10 years old in the 60s as she is preparing to go on vacation in the countryside she has seen too rarely in her childhood. The artwork is sublime. In traditional Japanese style, the language of flowers adds to the story. Even if we don't know the secret meaning behind the apparition of every flower, we recognize the beauty it creates on the big screen. The main characters in this English version are dubbed by DAISY RIDLEY and DEV PATEL. This movie has never been seen on the big screen in North America.

La Vanité est une production Suisse du réalisateur LIONEL BAIER mettant en vedette PATRICK LAPP, David Miller,  et CARMEN MAURA, Espéranza,  ainsi qu'IVAN GEORGIEV, Treplev. C'est une comédie noir qui est bien nuancée. Le personnage principale est un architecte qui souffre d'un cancer du cerveau mais qui refuse de vivre les conséquences de sa maladie dans un effort de survivre. Il préfère littéralement mourir! Espéranza (Maura) est l'intervenante qui accompagne la personne qui veut obtenir un suicide assisté, ce qui est permis seulement quand le patient n'a plus aucun recourt. Le jeux des trois comédiens est très captivant. L'émotivité et la sensibilité d'Espéranza contraste à merveille la désinvolture et le sarcasme de Miller. Treplev, c'est la jeunesse et le combat pour la survie qui est représenté par un jeune homme, marié et père de deux enfants, qui gagne sa vie en se prostituant. MAGNIFIQUE!

RYAN GANDER is a prolific and popular artist from Great Britain. He is a conceptual artist with a serious sense of humor. He is an ingenious artist whose strength relies on his wit. I have been studying the exhibitions of DAMIEN HIRST recently and can't help noticing the repetitive motifs both British artists appear fond of. This being said, and I must mention that I am not that enthralled by conceptual art even though I will always give it a chance, Gander's work is of the highest quality. The pieces reflect refined techniques and mastery of the mediums employed. In this show there are ample examples of the sculptures he realizes with marble resin. They look like tents with bumps. In fact, he was inspired by his children playing under a makeshift cabin they had constructed with their blankets. I enjoyed the entrance to the exhibition (upper left of image on top) where 3 event calendars were set up.

Ingenious!

From the start you are provided with  maps to guide you through the exhibition. This is where Gander's genius is revealed and you can see the complexities of his creative process. The large piece C++, for example, (upper right on top) is composed of the palettes used to realize 100 portraits of people the artist met. You will find a sheet detailing the name and story of each person. It is a lot of fun to retrace the stories.

RYAN GANDER est un artiste prolifique et populaire de la Grande Bretagne. C'est un artiste conceptuel avec un sérieux sens d'humour. C'est un artiste ingénieux dont la force dépend de sa présence d'esprit. J'ai étudié les expositions de DAMIEN HIRST récemment et je ne peux m'empêcher de remarquer les motifs répétitifs dont les deux artistes Britanniques semblent être épris. Ceci étant dit, et je dois souligner que je ne suis pas si enchantée par l'art conceptuel malgré que je vais toujours lui donner sa chance, l'oeuvre de Gander est de la plus haute qualité.  Les pièces reflètent ses techniques raffinées et sa maîtrise des médiums employés. Dans l'exposition il y a amples exemples des sculptures qu'il réalise avec la résine de marbre. Elles ressemblent à des tentes bosselées. Dans les faits, il a été inspiré par ses enfants qui s'amusaient sous une cabane improvisée qu'ils avaient construit avec leurs draps. J'ai aimé l'entrée vers l'exposition (image supérieure gauche en haut) où 3 calendriers / agendas sont installés.

Dès les premiers pas vous retrouverez les plans de l'exposition qui vous guideront. C'est ici que se révèle le génie de Gander et là où vous pourrez vous rendre compte des complexités de son processus créateur. L'immense pièce C++, par exemple, (image supérieur droite en haut) est composée de palettes utilisées pour exécuter 100 portraits de personnes que l'artiste a rencontré. Vous trouverez une feuille qui dit le nom de la personne ainsi que son histoire. J'ai trouvé ça très amusant de retracer les histoires.
