On June 29 2011, I rushed to the exhibition space where BERLINDE DE BRUYCKERE was waiting to meet us for a tour of her solo exhibition @ DHC-ART. I wanted to tell her that sometimes I felt exactly like her haunting figures, tormented, trying to keep myself together in spite of many conflicting emotions and values. She reacted with a subdued smile.

She proceeded to tell us about the inspiration behind the works chosen for this particular show. Behind her on the photograph above you see the massive sculpture Le Deux (2001). She revealed to us that she used the horse as a subject to express the complete devastation that afflicted Europe after the two World Wars of the last century. The rich brown fur covering the sculptures makes you feel like you want to grab these huge dolls that appear to be so soft to the touch. The face and hoofs have been removed to enhance the doll like quality of a piece that would otherwise be devastating because these two magnificent creatures have been violently killed and abandoned on the side of the road with their human companions who have met an equal fate.

The other two pieces in the same room, 20 (2007), are also quite revealing of the human condition at it's most challenging moments. I am so impressed that through her manipulation of matter she has materialized deep emotions we all share but find hard to express in words. They make me feel like :< That is what I mean but cannot put into words.>

Le 29 Juin 2011, j'ai couru vers l'espace d'exposition où BERLINDE DE BRUYCKERE nous attendait pour nous accompagner durant la visite de son solo @ DHC-ART. Je voulais lui dire que certains jours je me sentais exactement comme ses figures qui vous hantent l'esprit, tourmentée, m'efforçant de garder mon sang froid malgré des émotions et des valeurs en conflit. Elle a réagi avec un sourire délicat.

Elle a procédé à nous parler de son inspiration derrière les oeuvres choisies pour cette exposition particulière. Derrière elle sur la photo en-haut vous voyez la sculpture massive Le Deux (2001). Elle nous révèle qu'elle se servait du cheval comme sujet pour exprimer la dévastation totale de l'Europe après les deux Guerres Mondiales du dernier siècle. La riche fourrure brune qui recouvre les sculptures nous donne l'envie de sauter sur les pièces qui évoquent les poupées en peluches de nos enfances. Le visage et les sabots sont enlevés pour augmenter la qualité sensuelle que les pièces inspirent, sinon ces détails dérangeant limiteraient l'exploration de réactions à la pièce par l'horreur qu'ils rappellent car ces deux créatures formidables ont été tuées violemment et abandonnées sur le bord du chemin avec leurs compagnons humains qui ont subis le même sort.

Les deux autres pièces dans le même espace, , 20 (2007), sont aussi très révélatrices de la condition humaine à ses moments les plus difficiles. Je suis tellement impressionnée que par sa manipulation de la matière elle a donné forme à des émotions profondes que nous ressentons tous mais qui sont presqu'impossible à mettre en mots. Je me disais:< C'est ça que j'essais de dire.>
