MIRACLE SEASON

Directed by Sean McNamara, this movie scripted by David Aaron Cohen and Elissa Matsueda recounts a season of heart crushing loss surmounted by love and Spirit that would lead the West High School girl's volleyball team to a rare twice in a row championship. In the above photos you see the real Caroline Found whose smile and spirit come right through the old photos. Line, as she was nicknamed, died in a tragic accident just before the official start of the 2011 season. She was the captain of the team and spurred people to dare to be better, to go all the way, to seek new friendships. Her mother Ellyn was in the last stages of cancer when Line died on August 11 2011 at age 17.  Adding to the oppressive sense of grief that befell the team, Ellyn died less than two weeks after her daughter on August 23 2011.

Two major talents, Helen Hunt and William Hurt play coach Kathy Bresnahan and Line's dad Ernie Found. Although they should bring emotional depth to such a profound and meaningful story, it is not enough. Very sadly the project is superficial and off tempo as it speeds along to get to the victory but ignores the time of grief that brought the team together and made each player reach their best. It totally ignores the mother's death which is very significant in this tale. It is merely alluded to in a sign leading to her wake. The coach is very ambiguous when she is such an important figure in the story. In the end, we are not exalted by the victory as we should have been if we had gone through the ups and downs of the team with more feeling. I truly loved the live footage of the real team at the end. That part put a knot in my throat.

CHIMERA

Karishma Ahluwalia & Henry Ian Cusick

Writer Director Maurice Haeems has said he loves intelligent science-fiction movies based on real scientific research. Not only does this tale explore the many ethical dilemmas of stem cell research and the quest to create immortality going on right now but underlines the fact that this ambition has been in researchers minds since human intelligence began to manifest and evolve. Henry Ian Cusick plays mad scientist Quint who is desperately trying to save his children from an incurable disease that already took the life of his wife Jessie played by Karishma Ahluwalia by freezing them. Kathleen Quinlan plays Masterson a bizarre character who hopes to make a fortune from Quint's work but leads the project astray. The atmosphere of the movie is creepy, the characters reckless, the results nauseating. The result is HORROR!

HYPERLIGHT

An exquisite science-fiction short that you can see in its entirety from the link above. It stars Caroline Dhavernas, Jeananne Goosen and Peter Shinkoda. The movie opens with a dazed astronaut in an escape pod who realizes that her mission partner and lover is drifting away in space in another pod nearby. Director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen and writer Nicolas Billion have created a stunningly beautiful space and time mystery that was entirely shot in Montreal. I highly recommend you take a few moments to be mystified by this winner.
