The Segal Centre is the pearl of English theatre in Montreal. With this latest production, Golda's Balcony, it has outdone itself!
Tovah Feldshuh brings the remarkable Golda Meir to life in this superbly crafted and masterfully executed one-woman-show. We must imagine the time when Golda Meir came of age, a time when women had not yet made their place in politics and a time when women's rights issues were still contested pretty much everywhere. Born in Russia, she grew up in Milwaukee. After getting married to Morris Meyerson, the couple settled in Palestine. There she was a stay at home mom for a while and then grew into her destiny. A riveting tale of an extraordinary woman.
Tovah Feldshuh's performance is exquisite! With perfect mastery she delivers the story, the character, the depth and the sense of humor of a woman who rose to the highest political position any woman has ever reached in the Middle East in order to birth the nation of Israel.
After each show Tovah Feldshuh runs to the hall where she personally autographs various items related to the production of the play. I got myself a dedicated autographed copy of the DVD The Journey to Golda's Balcony that features Tovah Feldshuh, is narrated by Alec Baldwin, written, directed and produced by Yves Gérard Issembert.
