Mary Shelley
Director: Haifaa al-Mansour
It is unavoidable that historical dramas are tainted by a modern perspective. It is hard to endure the sexism of that time even though the movie is very beautiful to look at. The two lovers: writer Mary Shelley played by Elle Fanning and poet Percy Shelley played by Douglas Booth: are simply gorgeous and glow with the romanticism of their time. Through their writing they explore the mysteries of life and death that inspired Mary Shelley's iconic character the Creature in Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus. I enjoyed the movie but I felt it remained superficial since the protagonists of the story were asking such deep and interesting questions.
Director: Rob Reiner
Stars: Woody Harrelson, James Marsden, Rob Reiner
Rob Reiner is very vocal about how much he deplores the Trump presidency. This film was a sort of cautionary tale about protecting the First amendment and the free press. Unfortunately, this past Monday's ( July 16 2018 ) bizarre summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin seem to take the wind out of the sails of this subdued movie. I found it hard to get into as I was preoccupied following the fallout of what I consider a huge treason on the part of Trump. I am not saying there should not be better relations between countries but, honestly, these relations should not be the fruit of treason.
