Portrait of Lakshmibai, Queen of Jhansi |
This exquisitely beautiful movie is based on a true story. It is so refreshing that the history of women is emerging in the cinema at this time when the rights of women are once again being challenged in many political arenas. Director Swati Bhise's first feature movie brings to life a long forgotten world and culture that was totally overtaken by the British. The English sense of entitlement was enormous! It appeared normal to those "civilized" people to just take from others and killing them if that was not acceptable to the indigenous people!
Lakshmî Bâî a young widowed queen who became a warrior raised an army of 14 000 women who fought the British Raj.
The queen is played by Devika Bhise the director's daughter. Other cast members include Rupert Everett, Derek Jacobi, Nathaniel Parker, Ben Lamb.
What amazed me the most was to learn the story of these courageous women at a time ( 1850s) when women's rights were not even yet recognized in the west. Again, the beauty of the film is mesmerizing.
Opening in theaters this November 15.
