ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU trailer

ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU

If you're in the mood for a fast paced incredible life or death true escape story, this movie is for you!

Based on a true story, the film is based on events that happened in Somalia in 1991. Ambassadors from both North Korea and South Korea were attempting to seduce Somali officials to vote for them to be recognized by the UN when a violent civil war exploded in the capital of Mogadishu.

The film begins with a group of South Korean diplomats rushing to get to President Siad Barre to present him with official gifts so they can win his endorsement. A series of humorous mishaps make this goal impossible! They arrive on his estate just in time to see their rivals from North Korea leaving the appointment that had been scheduled for them. That is when the niceties end and the civil war begins.

It takes quite a few deadly exchanges before the North and South embassy staff realize they must put surviving above all other considerations. From that point on, they will use all the resources around them and the resources of their minds to cross a city in the midst of  nightmarish attacks on all sides!

The scenes are very well executed and the tension runs high and relentless! The extraordinary cast delivers on every level as we can sense their impending doom at every corner.

MASS trailer

MASS

Jason Isaacs and Martha Plimpton play Jay and Gail, parents whose son has died violently during a school shooting. They go to a lutheran church to meet Reed Birney and Ann Dowd as Richard and Linda, the parents of the deranged shooter, himself a schoolboy. The set is bare, the entire tale is drawn out by the amazing performances of the actors. If you love the craft of acting, this is one of the finest expression of what actors do, create a multidimensional artwork using their entire bodies.

In the beginning we see Breeda Wool (Judy) preparing the room where the reunion between the pair of parents will occur. We see the turmoil of Jay and Gail as even as they are close to the church's door are unsure if they are doing the right thing. Then Richard and Linda arrive timidly, Linda awkwardly bringing a flower arrangement for Gail.

The conversation advances as we get more and more details about who the killer is and who the victim is. What were the events that led up to the school shooting? Why hadn't the parents seen signs their son was so mentally disturbed?

The despair of both sets of parents becomes a palpable unbearable weight until there does come a moment of resolution.

I have never seen anything like this. At first glance you might think the movie couldn't capture your attention because the premise is so simple. But the disturbing touching intimacy and revelations keep us glued as we want to know what happened as much as the parents.

The movie was written and directed by Fran Krantz who is also a popular actor seen on many movies and TV shows.

THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN trailer

THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN

Louis Wain was a contemporary of the wonderful Beatrix Potter. Although both of them had very different lives, they both thrived as artists who drew animals with human characteristics.

The movie felt to me like when a storybook comes to life in our imaginations as we listen to a narrator read the words. There is a lot going on at the same time in any scene, from the decor to how Benedict Cumberbatch performs the role of Louis Wain: he is hyperactive,  draws at great speed with astonishing precision with both hands at once, he is shy yet expresses his views of electricity boldly enough.

The special effects department did a superb job at aging the characters and every once in a while, a scene is morphed into a painting. Set decorations and costumes are likewise magnificent and the cats! The adorable cute playful mysterious cats popping out all over the place.

Olivia Colman is the narrator who puts what is going on in context with comments like the one about Victorian England by “its bizarre social prejudices and the fact that everything stank of shit.” Claire Foy plays Emily Richardson-Wain, Louis's wife.

I enjoyed this oddball biopic very much.

Opens in theatres on October 22 2021

THE POWER OF THE DOG

FESTIVAL DU NOUVEAU CINÉMA

The Power Of The Dog

You have never seen Benedict Cumberbatch like this.

Jane Campion, who won multiple awards in her career, was in Montreal for the first screening of her latest masterpiece The Power Of The Dog this past October 6th and won a lifetime achievement award from the festival. She wrote the screenplay based on the novel by Thomas Savage.

Her latest film is a powerful psychological drama that pits masculine stereotypes one against the other.  Phil Burbank ( Benedict Cumberbatch ) and his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) are wealthy ranchers in the 1920s that have slept in the same room all their lives. Their characters are drastically different. George enjoys taking baths and dressing to the hilts while Phil is an angry rebel who refuses to wash at all. Right from the beginning we see that George is moving past his relationship with his brother Phil whose multiple attempts to engage dialogue with his brother are met with silence.

A woman has won over George's heart, Rose Gordon, played with emotional depth and inner turmoil by Kristen Dunst. She operates an inn where the cowboys deliver their cattle. Her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is an artistically inclined intellectual teenager who is tall and slender and attracts the wrath of Phil who begins a campaign of bullying against the young man. The tension is intense between Rose and Phil because she sees how he treats her son and he sees the grip she has on her brother. The tension is relentless until the dramatic last act when secrets are revealed and the least suspected character is divulged to be a cunning killer.

The gorgeous cinematography also pits the vastness of the distant blue mountains over golden fields with the closed-in dark wood panelled home shared by the Burbank clan. The buzz is that this movie is a strong Oscar contender.

FNC EPLORE @ CENTRE PHI • 6.10 > 17.10.2021

Icarus de Michel Lemieux

Michel Lemieux © Lena Ghio 2021

MARIA CHAPDELAINE

Bande Annonce
ENGLISH translation app on the left

Relic Traveller: Where You and I Come From, We Know That We Are Not Here Forever

Until Jan. 9, 2022

Contemporary artists are increasingly expressing their creativity through multimedia. A concern that is also enveloping the minds of young artists is the climate crisis. This combination leads to forms of expressions that attempt to come to grips with issues that transcend all of our minds, that attempt to find solutions humanity desperately needs as the elements rage and the weather is erratic, dangerous destroying lives and homes and cities. Larry Achiampong's work presented at PHI Foundation is part of an ongoing project he began in 2017, Relic Traveller  is an example of this impulse.

A British artist of Ghanaian ancestry, Achiampong is concerned with issues of colonialism that we westerners see only from the invader's side. Although he has lived in Britain all his life, Brexit awakened concerns about colonialism from the perspective of the invaded country. Although the climate crisis will bring about completely alien forms of colonialism with humanity moving and seeking refuge in a chaotic world with uncertain resources. You will detect this idea like a subtle spice under the larger discourse that are already older than this summer's crisis of large scale fires, floods, and unbearable heat.

The exhibition that is composed of a series of three interrelated, immersive installations begins at the entrance of the gallery with the floor  painted with red clay that spreads throughout the whole exhibition to evoke the red earth of Ghana. The idea is to allow the footsteps of the visitors to create new paths through the gallery space as refugees do and also as new solutions find their way to our consciousness.

In the first space you will see the coming together of two important projects: The Relic Travellers Alliance: Assembly 1 & 2 (2021) and PAN AFRICAN FLAGS FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE (2017 - 2021).  These installations reveal some very expressive and appealing designs in the forms of flags and military like uniforms. Each flag is an intricate story written in colours and forms. The second space, Reliquary Conceptual Imagery (2020), features images from Achiampong's latest film Reliquary 2 that were created by Wumi Olaosebikan a.k.a. Wumzurn. The film combines animation with real cinematography and is the ongoing story of Achiampong's futuristic alter ego that is revealed in many facets of the exhibition. The final space combines series of short films- Relic 0 (2017), Relic 1 (2017), Relic 2 (2019), Relic 3 (2019) - as well as Reliquary 2, - with flags from the PAN AFRICAN FLAGS FOR THE RELIC TRAVELLERS' ALLIANCE.

My impression of the whole is that the artist approaches the issues of our times with an eye towards a political resolution. There is no doubt that in a very near future all of us will have to rally to face unique challenges. It would be fabulous if we could rally around sound politics.

MOMENTA BIENNALE sensing nature

In the context of the MOMENTA BIENNALE the PHI Foundation, in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of contemporary art, hosts two complex installations. On the first floor you will visit a soft reflective space with a spring of water joyfully bubbling among the rocks in a green screen structure, it is spill. Abbas Akhavan wants the space to allow you a break from the chaos of city life. To accompany your pause in this serene space,  Akhavan has commissioned authors to provide you with a unique text to augment your meditative experiment. During my visit, I enjoyed the work of Kim Nguyen but a different author will be featured each month.

On the second floor, Jamilah Sabur, a Jamaican artist living in Miami, presents The Mountain Sings Underwater. She uses installations, videos, performances to expose hidden stories about our brief passage on shifting landscapes. She addresses colonialism, but also, we see an emergence of her ancestral roots in some archetypal designs and dances she uses to tell her stories. My impression of her work was that it was attempting to reconnect with the deepest layer of nature that we have called Spirit since time immemorial. I exchanged this concept with curator Stefanie Hessler and she supported the view that I was on the right track in my approach to Sabur's work.
