ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU

If you're in the mood for a fast paced incredible life or death true escape story, this movie is for you!

Based on a true story, the film is based on events that happened in Somalia in 1991. Ambassadors from both North Korea and South Korea were attempting to seduce Somali officials to vote for them to be recognized by the UN when a violent civil war exploded in the capital of Mogadishu.

The film begins with a group of South Korean diplomats rushing to get to President Siad Barre to present him with official gifts so they can win his endorsement. A series of humorous mishaps make this goal impossible! They arrive on his estate just in time to see their rivals from North Korea leaving the appointment that had been scheduled for them. That is when the niceties end and the civil war begins.

It takes quite a few deadly exchanges before the North and South embassy staff realize they must put surviving above all other considerations. From that point on, they will use all the resources around them and the resources of their minds to cross a city in the midst of  nightmarish attacks on all sides!

The scenes are very well executed and the tension runs high and relentless! The extraordinary cast delivers on every level as we can sense their impending doom at every corner.

MASS trailer

MASS

Jason Isaacs and Martha Plimpton play Jay and Gail, parents whose son has died violently during a school shooting. They go to a lutheran church to meet Reed Birney and Ann Dowd as Richard and Linda, the parents of the deranged shooter, himself a schoolboy. The set is bare, the entire tale is drawn out by the amazing performances of the actors. If you love the craft of acting, this is one of the finest expression of what actors do, create a multidimensional artwork using their entire bodies.

In the beginning we see Breeda Wool (Judy) preparing the room where the reunion between the pair of parents will occur. We see the turmoil of Jay and Gail as even as they are close to the church's door are unsure if they are doing the right thing. Then Richard and Linda arrive timidly, Linda awkwardly bringing a flower arrangement for Gail.

The conversation advances as we get more and more details about who the killer is and who the victim is. What were the events that led up to the school shooting? Why hadn't the parents seen signs their son was so mentally disturbed?

The despair of both sets of parents becomes a palpable unbearable weight until there does come a moment of resolution.

I have never seen anything like this. At first glance you might think the movie couldn't capture your attention because the premise is so simple. But the disturbing touching intimacy and revelations keep us glued as we want to know what happened as much as the parents.

The movie was written and directed by Fran Krantz who is also a popular actor seen on many movies and TV shows.

THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN trailer

THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN

Louis Wain was a contemporary of the wonderful Beatrix Potter. Although both of them had very different lives, they both thrived as artists who drew animals with human characteristics.

The movie felt to me like when a storybook comes to life in our imaginations as we listen to a narrator read the words. There is a lot going on at the same time in any scene, from the decor to how Benedict Cumberbatch performs the role of Louis Wain: he is hyperactive,  draws at great speed with astonishing precision with both hands at once, he is shy yet expresses his views of electricity boldly enough.

The special effects department did a superb job at aging the characters and every once in a while, a scene is morphed into a painting. Set decorations and costumes are likewise magnificent and the cats! The adorable cute playful mysterious cats popping out all over the place.

Olivia Colman is the narrator who puts what is going on in context with comments like the one about Victorian England by “its bizarre social prejudices and the fact that everything stank of shit.” Claire Foy plays Emily Richardson-Wain, Louis's wife.

I enjoyed this oddball biopic very much.

Opens in theatres on October 22 2021
