At the movies, opening today!

Spotlight

In 2002, a group of journalists working for The Boston Globe, in charge of a segment called Spotlight did what few reporters did at the time. They investigated the entangled corruption of a system, both religious and legal, that permitted pernicious child abuse to continue unchecked in the Roman Catholic church. This movie retraces the steps taken by the journalists as they followed every lead from victims to perpetrator. I just loved this movie! The cast is excellent and every character is represented with their unique features. MARK RUFFALO is Mike Rezendes, a man who forgets to eat when he is chasing a story; MICHAEL KEATON is Walter 'Robby' Robinson, the man in charge of the department; RACHEL McADAMS is Sacha Pfeiffer, a woman who attends church regularly with her grand-mother and will have to reveal the truth about their parish priest to the elderly woman; LIEV SCHREIBER is Marty Baron, the new Editor in Chief who gets the ball rolling on the investigation. STANLEY TUCCI is again great in the role of a supporting character actor as Mitchell Garabedian, a lawyer who has been trying to get justice for the victims for many years. The movie is exciting from beginning to end, coherent and consistent.  A must see!

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR is Ray, an investigator that is part of a tight knit team of investigators on top of their game when the call comes in that the body of a young girl has been found in a garbage dumpster. JULIA ROBERTS is Jess, his partner but also, as it cruelly turns out, the mother of the victim. NICOLE KIDMAN is new at the prosecutors office and shares a mutual yet unrequited attraction for Ray. JOE COLE plays the prime suspect for the crime and here is where the plot becomes unusual. The movie follows two investigations on the same crime but in two different time frames in tandem. The three lead characters recall their memories of the first investigation while we are witnessing the ongoing investigation in real time. So Joe Cole is Marzin, the original suspect, and Beckwith, the current suspect who is believed by Ray to be Marzin after surgery. The movie is a tense thriller that has two surprise ending back to back. It is brilliant the way Director and screenplay writer BILLY RAY, along with other writers JUAN JOSÉ CAMPANELLA and EDUARDO SACHERI who wrote "El secreto de sus ojos" bend time to bring us to a revulsive conclusion.

November 2015 has been a mild one so far with dashing colors and warmer than usual weather granting us plenty of sunshine and many varieties of still blossoming flowers. This wonderful climate was the backdrop of the Re Create Symposium of 2015. In spite of my excitement over the 5 day event I could only pack in about 10% of all the discussions, book launch, demonstrations and talks offered. So bear this in mind as I give you the following report.

The first day ( Nov 4 ) and the next morning ( Nov 5 ) set the stage for the unfolding of the event by presenting various artistic and research practices from around the world. I arrived for the afternoon session which analysed the evolution and current status of Digital Art. OLIVER GRAU, editor of MediaArtHistories, tells us that Media Art is distinct from collectible art and is a field that is underrepresented in the current art world and that it suffers from lack of funding because of this. He makes us aware that there is a continuously evolving language between science and art, that institutional knowledge and new knowledge evolving from our new technologies lead the questions: What does the word research mean today? What is radical in today's thinking?

Then MICHAEL CENTURY took the microphone to discuss his 1999 paper Pathways to Innovation in Digital Culture for which he received financial support from the Rockfeller Foundation. Here he outlined an extraordinary list of practices and added that the list is growing everyday as art and science become more and more symbiotic. He recommended the book The New Production of Knowledge by MICHAEL GIBBONS. This site is a reference for many applications of new technologies in all facets of modern life.

Next we listened to LOUISE POISSANT the recently appointed Scientific Director of FRQSC. She pointed out the various treatments of digital photography that enter into the category of New Media Art like augmented reality. She questioned the esthetics of technological art and the changes in perspective they bring about in each of us, like distortions of space-time for example.

GEORGINA BORN from Oxford University, who is a great example of the type of professor being forged by the hybridization of disciplines happening in most large institutions in the world, is a professor of anthropology and music. I enjoyed the perspective this allowed her to have on the issues being discussed. She focused on the ethnography of art-science and transdisciplinary experimentation. I loved that she raised questions we should all be asking ourselves as we move forward: What are we doing? Where is this taking us? There are ethical issues and funding issues to consider as everyday a new practice emerges.

GISÈLE TRUDEL and CHERYL SIM closed the afternoon with a discussion on the important theme of "weaving strands" between what is happening in universities, cultural institutions and what artists outside those confines could be working on that could be neglected.

The evening was filled with a vernissage at Concordia's FOFA Gallery, a conference with the artist-scientists WHITEFEATHER HUNTER and TRISTAN MATHESON, who create art installations and new media installations from cell cultures. This was followed by an extraordinary keynote address from JOAN JONAS who retraced her practice all the way back to her work with mirrors and performance art. During the keynote address, Cheryl Sim told us they were preparing a retrospective of the American artist @ DHC /ART for next April.

On November 6th, the panel was presenting various practices from around the world while GEORGINA BORN was moderator. We heard from YAN BREULEUX, KATJA KWASTEK, MARTINA LEEKER + IRINA KALDRACK, and SALLY JANE NORMAN who specializes in the practices and languages of art. Here is a brilliant article by Professor Norman: The Power of Culture. Next, the second Keynote Speaker of the symposium, CHRISTINE VAN ASSCHE, who will retire soon from the position of Director of Centre Pompidou in Paris where she has been working for over 30 years. She reviewed the beginnings of new media art from the work she has done with some of the worlds most famous artists: PIPILOTTI RIST, NAM JUNE PAIK, CHRIS MARKER, MONA HATOUM, BRUCE NAUMAN: the acquisitions and the challenges of preserving these works.

My last visit to the symposium was on November 7th to listen to the last Keynote Speaker, SKAWENNATI, an artist who is born of a Mohawk woman and first generation Italian father. I mention her heritage because I think it contributes to her extraordinary personality. I truly enjoyed the work she showed us on how she created stories using Second Life for example. Her concept was to tell aboriginal people to imagine their place in the future. I looked at her series TimeTraveller and it is excellent.

I ended my exploration of the symposium by meeting two outstanding New Media artists that blew my mind! THIERRY GUIBERT who is currently exploring an interactive visual project where he replaces the playhead of a record player with a micro camera that creates an image from a modified disk in the computer that then transforms this image into sound! And MARIE-LAURE CAZIN who is a multidisciplinary artist who wrote a screenplay and made a movie that will be altered by some audience members that will wear headphone sensors that catch brainwaves and affect certain preprogrammed choice that will alter the plot of the movie. She was inspired by FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA' s words: " I want a film which is different from one day to the other..."

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 / Hunger Games : La Révolte – Dernière partie

Trailer / Bande-Annonce

This November 20th the long awaited final chapter of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 will open. I was very excited about going to this movie but, honestly, it left me baffled.

We left the last movie with Katniss Everdeen (JENNIFER LAWRENCE) finding a very debilitated Peeta Mellark (JOSH HUTCHERSON) while the stage was being set for this final battle.

What happens next is so confusing and inconclusive it felt like the writers, Peter Craig, Danny Strong, and Suzanne Collins just ran out of steam and wanted to be done with it! We see PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, who died in February 2014, as Plutarch Heavensbee colluding with JULIANNE MOORE'S President Alma Coin, but it makes no sense!

Katniss is removed from the battle to become some kind of reality TV star for political reasons. For a great part of the movie, we see her thinking and walking (?)

The ending does not make sense either, but you will have to check that out for yourself.

LOVE THE COOPERS

TRAILER
The moment I saw this trailer, I knew I wanted to see this movie. Now I know many critics will find this movie too much of this and not enough of that! But for me it was what I wanted to feel, something light and familiar.

Every year people all around the world must get together with their relatives, regardless of the holiday their faith favors, and face each other with their disappointments or failures, and find a way to grow in love with each other again, because that is what family is!

First I LOVE the cast, ALL OF THEM! DIANE KEATON, JOHN GOODMAN, ALAN ARKIN, MARISA TOMEI, ED HELMS, OLIVIA WILDE, JAKE LACY and all the rest.

We catch each member of the family on his or her way to the Christmas dinner table being prepared by Charlotte (Keaton) and Sam (Goodman) who are undergoing a secret marital crisis but want to give their family one perfect Christmas before letting them in on the secret.

The weaving of tales gets us to this dinner table with all the trimmings but all is not perfect when an unexpected family tragedy breaks everybody's heart. STEVE MARTIN is the voice of the family dog.

I truly enjoyed this movie!

AFTER CIRCUS looks at the life of circus clowns and acrobats once their bodies can no longer support their work. It is a film by VIVEKA MELKI presented this Saturday the 14th  and also on November 18th in the presence of the director or other member of the crew.

DEATH IN THE PORT JACKSON HOTEL is another intriguing film by ED VAN DER ELSKEN who engages in a conversation with Australian artist Vali Myers in 1972. You hear the voices of Ed and Vali as they look through a photo album of their time in Paris in the beatnik bohemian years. Many of their impoverished friends died young, some from overdoses, others suicide. A discussion on the impulse to photograph will accompany this film.

IN JACKSON HEIGHTS looks at life in the most multicultural neighborhood in New York city, including a large LGBT population. As you can see from this trailer the movie is colorful and lively. Just a lovely project! The English version will be this Saturday at 2:PM.
