RIVER
 Directed by Junta Yamaguchi

This wonderful fantasy comedy is set in one of Japan's most serene vacation spots Japanese Inn Fujiya in Kibune Kyoto Japan.

The movie opens with a beautiful young girl (Shiori Kubo) dressed all in white putting a prayer in a temple. We then find ourselves inside the Inn where we see the cooks, the wait staff, and the head hostess concluding the lunch hour. Everyone is heading towards their last minute tasks when the young servant realizes she is back at two minutes in the past.

Eventually, all the inhabitants of the Inn become aware they have become trapped by a time loop and begin to explore ways to escape it.

I loved this easy joyful film enriched by the beautiful nature of Kibune Kyoto. Riko Fujitani is adorable in the role of Mikoto, a girl in love with a young cook who wants to move to Paris.

THE NIGHT OWL  Directed by An Tae-jin

An elegant period drama where the mysterious death of Crown Prince Sohyeon in 1645 is the real historical event on which the screenplay is structured.

Ryu Jun Yeol plays Cheon Kyeong-Soo, an acupuncturist who is legally blind and can only gets a blurry view of things at night. He is very gifted and asked to work at the King's court. His employment begins just as Crown Prince Sohyeon is released from years of being a hostage in the Manchu court at Shenyang. The Prince has serious health issues so he receives regular treatments. One night, the blind acupuncturist is invited to assist the courts head doctor to work on the Prince. That is when the blind owl realizes he is caught up in a dark political intrigue surrounded by the most dangerous people.

The beauty of this movie transports us to another time. From the costumes to the set designs to the rhythm of the unfolding tragedy, we are captivated. This was one of my favorite movie of the festival.

Unfortunately, these wonderful films played only once at FANTASIA FEST   but keep an eye out for their theatrical or streaming release dates.

There are still many exciting films to see in the coming days. Check it out.
