"I Want to Leave This Earth Behind" is a mesmerizing and thought-provoking immersive digital art project that takes viewers on a journey through speculative-fictive realities and explores themes of space exploration, Crip futurism, and the human experience in unlivable conditions. Created by Stefana Fratila and Diana Lynn VanderMeulen in collaboration with NASA scientists, this multi-sensory experience combines audio, visuals, and extended reality to transport audiences into otherworldly atmospheres.

The project's philosophy delves into the idea of imagining interplanetary environments that are inherently inhospitable to human life, thereby converting all bodies into handicapped bodies. This concept challenges traditional notions of ability and invites viewers to reconsider what it means to exist and thrive in diverse environments, both on Earth and beyond.

One of the standout features of "I Want to Leave This Earth Behind" is its use of vibrant colors and dynamic visuals that seamlessly transition between scenes, creating a sense of movement and transformation. The rapid succession of night and day, coupled with the evocative soundscape, contributes to the immersive nature of the experience, making viewers feel like they are floating through different celestial landscapes.

Stefana Fratilaa Romanian-born artist and composer based in Toronto, brings her expertise in sound design and storytelling to the project. Her background as a DJ and co-founder of Crip Rave adds a unique perspective on inclusivity and accessibility within art spaces. Fratila's collaboration with NASA scientists to recreate the atmospheres of each planet in our solar system enhances the project's authenticity and scientific grounding.

aaDiana Lynn VanderMeulen , a multidisciplinary artist known for her work in extended reality and cyclical material use, contributes her innovative approach to creating immersive environments. "A Boundless and Radiant Aura," VanderMeulen's work combined with Fratila's sound exploration, further expands the project's reach and sensory impact. VanderMeulen's past exhibitions demonstrate her ability to bridge the gap between analogue and digital mediums, showcasing her versatility and creativity.

The project's development through a research-creation residency with the Society des Arts  Technologiques highlights the importance of collaboration and access to resources in pushing the boundaries of digital art. The adaptation of the work for the Satosphere's multi-channel sound system and 360-degree projectors demonstrates a commitment to creating a fully immersive experience for audiences.

Overall, "I Want to Leave This Earth Behind" is a testament to the power of art to inspire imagination, challenge perceptions, and create meaningful connections. Through its exploration of space, disability, and futurism, the project invites viewers to contemplate the vastness of the universe and our place within it, prompting questions about identity, adaptation, and resilience in the face of the unknown.
