FNC Pro

The FNC is in full swing!

The FNC is in full swing! I am sharing a few of my personal highlights. Last Thanksgiving week-end I took in three great movies. First, Boychoir, a film by FRANÇOIS GIRARD, who received a Louve d'Or @ FNCfor this film, a filmmaker known for his movies relating to music: Thirty-two Short Films About Glenn Gould and The red Violin, for example. You mustn't look at the details of the story to enjoy its spirit that is music. A disaffected young boy with the intervention of a teacher Ms Steel, DEBRA WINGER, and the return of a wealthy father, JOSH LUCAS, he had never met, finds his way to a prestigious private school that is specialized in creating award winning boy choirs. Its strong suits are the cast and the music. The interplay of great performers like DUSTIN HOFFMAN as Master Carvelle, KATY BATES as Headmistress, and a very contained EDDIE IZZARD as is itself musical but you add the multiplied talents of the young boys and that crystal pure voice of an upcoming star, GARRETT WAREING in the role of Stet and the movie blows you away!

Then I saw Fires on the plain. It is a remake of the original 1950's movie about the last days of the Imperial Japanese Army fighting in Leyte by Director KON ICHIKAWA. Here filmmaker SHINYA TSUKAMOTO puts intense color into a devastating situation human beings have somehow not yet mastered, questioning why we accept this, showing us the full horror of our inability to stop murdering each other. TSUKAMOTO wants us to live this horror of war at the ground level and his intention comes through. It is a delicate balancing act to maintain the viewers attention on the profound message of a film so replete with gore and maggots and flying body parts. To add to the state of confusion, as we see the events through the eyes of a very sick soldier who can't tell if he is alive or dead, is the luscious jungle with blossoming voluptuous red flowers that multiply relentlessly as humans decapitate each other. TSUKAMOTO's movie worked! I definitely DO NOT want to go there!

The Tale of Princess Kaguya is the final masterpiece of ISAO TAKAHATA who is retiring  and of Studio Ghibli of Japan who are renowned for their exquisite animated features like Spirited Away who are closing. The visual is so beautiful and youthful it is hard to describe without fawning over it. Ultimately it reminds us of the relativity of time. As much as its tender beginning is slow, it then rushes inevitably towards that moment when the Princess realizes, like we all do in times of major transformations, that this precious painful life on earth is over so quickly and how we cling to our loved ones and our beloved planet who has made us cry so much when it is time for us to go!

There is an exciting week-end ahead, follow the link to find out all the exciting activities.

FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO EXPRESSIONISM, 1900-1914
This week-end, a dazzlingly colorful new exhibition will open its doors at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts that includes the work of some of the most beloved artists from the last turn of the century before World War 1. Every important artistic movement of that era is represented and some rare jewels are on our soil for the first time. It begins with the first breaking away from the very conservative art schools of Europe with artists like CÉZANNE and BRAQUE with cubism, fauvism with VAN DONGEN, expressionism with FEININGER and OTTO DIX, abstract avant-guard with FRANZ MARC and WASSILY KANDINSKY and of course the revolution in color and style by the likes of VAN GOGH and GAUGUIN! And more.

Details from the magnificent painting The Wedding by Henri Rousseau. Notice the use of the paintbrush to form the hair, the texture of the skin, to express the emotion of the character.

TIMOTHY O. BENSON, curator of the exhibition, was fascinated with the origins of the artistic revolution of the pre-war era as well as the cultural interaction it caused that is still a fundamental heritage in our times. The art of that era shocked like never before with its brush strokes, its audacity, its confrontation with the mores, the explosive emotions put on canvas.

There is a large room devoted to the First World War complete with photographs, movie reels, and art inspired by the horrors of that war. An abundantly illustrated catalogue accompanies this exhibition and it will help you deepen your experience of this important time for the arts and for humanity.

The rooms are colorful and filled with added bonuses like here some prints by Gauguin.

ALEXANDER and the Terrible, Horrible, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY

This latest Disney pic is at once good and not so good.

I enjoyed many elements of the feature film: the cast: STEVE CARELL as Ben Cooper, JENNIFER GARNER as Kelly Cooper two parents who are about to live through a chaotic day; their children: ED OXENBOULD an Alexander Cooper, the initiator of the cursed day that is also his birthday, DYLAN MINETTE as Anthony Cooper, a teenager getting ready to go to prom with his sweetheart and KERRIS DORSEY as Emily Cooper, the one who is rehearsing for the opening of the school play in the role of Peter Pan. I always love MEGAN MULLALLY, here she is Kelly Cooper's boss, Nina, her appearance is short but she is terrific as the scary boss.

The film is also built on a good script written by ROB LEIBER. Unfortunately something gets lost in translation. I cannot deny that it is a pleasant movie but there are no uproarious moments like those I craved from this title, cast and production company.

It is a pleasant Sunday-afternoon-rainy-day movie.

LEFT BEHIND

LEFT BEHIND is in theory a movie about the biblical prophecy about the rapture, an event cited in the bible where God will take some people to heaven and leave others behind to struggle in a Godless chaotic world. Oscar Winner NICHOLAS CAGE stars as Ray Steele, an airline pilot poised to commit adultery on the very day of this predicted event. His wife Irene, played by LEA THOMSON, is a devout catholic getting ready for the rapture every single day. But it is the daughter Chloe Steele, played by CASSI THOMSON, that is the protagonist to Ray Steele as they work to save the airplane he is driving in the second half of the movie.

This movie is so bad it boggles the mind! It does serve up many of modern man's views on God that suffer irreparably from the warped views of ignorant and biassed interpreters of scriptures, not to mention the use made through the centuries by egomaniacs  that used God, the concept of God, to serve their own agendas.

I laugh every time I hear a person, real or fictive, say something like: "He is God right, He can stop earthquakes if he wants to." Why? Because it assumes we understand what is a priori claimed as the greatest mystery by all religions. It assumes God is at our service and at our disposal, that if things don't work out the way our ego would like then it also assumes a whole new set of facts not in evidence, that there is no God, that He punishes those that don't read the bible, the infidels, and so on. This is however the philosophical foundation of this film. Then the film makers, in their efforts to make it a blockbuster, threw in the flying unmanned exploding vehicles, fire in the streets and so on.

Sadly, you don't even get one moment of rapture from this movie. Leave this one behind.

SBC  GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY ART / GALERIE D'ART CONTEMPORAIN

GOLDIN + SENNEBY   M&A (mergers and acquisitions)

A very complex exploration of "juridical, financial and spatial constructs through the notion of the performative and the virtual" by artists SIMON GOLDIN and JAKOB SENNEBY. A screenplay, M&A, was created playwright JO RANDERSON, copies are available at the gallery if you wish to follow with the text. The images above are the actor GERARD HARRIS playing out the screenplay with various interventions from people in the audience. The G&S duo have explored the abstract nature of money in various hard to outline projects, at once conceptual and theatrical. PAUL LEONG is an investment banker and YBODON is a computer scientist, together  they produced  an algorithm that mirrors those that observe stock market activities to explore the speculative nature of both theatre and finance contextualized with the precarious conditions that characterize global society. This means that the performances scheduled to go on until November 22, 2014 will be interrupted if the flow of money is cut by the condition of the market. ANNA HEYMOWSKA is the set designer and JOHAN HJERPE is the graphic designer.

My reaction to the first day is mixed. On the one hand I find the concept very bold on the other I find it may be too big to be rendered in the method chosen. When I was looking at the performance I was not aware of its relationship with high finance and world markets which I understand very little anyway. After I knew this, it still left me confused as to the artists intentions.

Every performance/rehearsal new layers will be added on the walls and in the space. If the piece persists all the way to its planned date, the last day should reveal a very surprising result. The performances are in English and French, consult the site for details.

François Morelli is a multidisciplinary artist with many years of practice. In this exhibition there are sculptures, drawings, installations, print medium and video that investigate cycles, gyrations, the passage of time and the unavoidable transformations they produce. The installations produce a haunting effect with their gyroscopic grids with doll heads and other objects of daily life. He is an excellent draughtsman and painter using mostly acrylic paint in vibrant shades. His years of practice are evident with the exquisite mastery of his mediums. The artist books are textured colorful and evolve like a flowing river from page to page.

Alana Riley is a photographer and video artist based in Montreal. She is examining the physical and psychological demands of the actor at work in a series of video portraits of aspiring actors performing for the camera. It is high quality work but it gave me a dubious response. I have not watched television for several years now because I cannot stand the bizarre smiles of television personalities anymore. This installation reminded me of why I chose to abandon this activity.

This month the Lilian Rogriguez Gallery has invited young artists to innovate the drawing in a group exhibition that is entitled 100% Dessin!! (drawing). The artists above were present and you can tell that each has a unique approach to drawing. DANIEL LAHAISE draws by cutting out substance from his support until the image he seeks emerges. The results are fascinating and remind me of the ancient woodcutting practice of the early printmakers.  MARIANA SEMINO has such a detailed approach to her subject that they come alive on the canvas. CATHERINE BÉLIVEAU creates spiraling mobiles with her drawings that gives them a light floating quality. SOPHIE BURKE told me her drawings were of her ex-boyfriends and I found the idea very charming.

The Taiwanese artist CHIH-CHIEN WANG was present to showcase his very modern photographs. Discreet and luminous they either focus on an intimate moment, like smell table, 2014, or a larger subject like the sun in Bright Circle, 2014. It is all about how the elements reflect on one another. Until November 1 2014.

David Lafrance

The good news is that I discovered a delightful exhibition of the works of David Lafrance. The bad news is that I went on the last day of the show. Still his work is worth mentioning. The painting shown here is Un atelier à la campagne a large oil painting that resumes very well what I enjoyed about the exhibition. His paintings are colorful and play with multidimensionality as you can tell by the triangle showing us a sunset and the pair of soiled pants clearly in the forefront. There is something tribal about his work and it is very dynamic. You can see more on the gallery's website. The coming exhibition starting October 4th 2014 will feature the artist Jean-Benoit Pouliot : Contrepoints
