CEAL FLOYER @ DHC/ART

Last Tuesday I had the extreme pleasure of meeting the artist CEAL FLOYER at DHC/ART for the launching of a retrospective of her work. Her and curator JOHN ZEPPETELLI guided us through her complex work. Although her art has all the earmark of conceptual art, it goes beyond the phenomenological elements of the work to produce startling results for our perception out of the most mundane objects. This was the quality that produced the most joy for me. My favorite piece is simply called DOOR. It illustrates perfectly what I mean. It is both an installation and a projection. The projection consists of a strip of light at the bottom of a door that our minds interpret as there being an open light on the other side of the door. To confound our perception even more, when we walk in front of the projector the shadow of our moving feet suggests that people on the other side of the door are moving back and forth. The total effect of the piece was magical for me and evoked complex situations we attribute to real life: the sensation of people being busy behind a closed door for example, being mystified by what the people behind that door might be up to, who are they? All that captured in complete if deceptive simplicity.

Mardi passé j'ai eu le plaisir extrême de rencontré l'artiste CEAL FLOYER à DHC/ART pour le lancement d'une rétrospective de son oeuvre. Elle et le commissaire JOHN ZEPPETELLI nous ont guidé au travers son travail complexe. Malgrés que son art possède toutes les marques de l'art conceptuel, il dépasse les éléments phénoménologiques du travail pour produire des résultats surprenants pour notre perception à partir des objets les plus mondains. C'est cette qualité qui a produit le plus de joie chez moi. Ma pièce favorite s'intitule simplement DOOR (PORTE). Elle illustre parfaitement ce que je veux dire. C'est une installation et aussi une projection. La projection consiste en une lanière de lumière au bas d'une porte que notre mental interprète en lumière allumée dans la salle voisine de l'autre côté de la porte. Pour confondre notre perception encore plus, quand on marche devant le projecteur, l'ombre de nos propres pieds suggère qu'il y a des gens de l'autre côté de cette porte qui bougent de gauche à droite. L'effet total de a pièce a été magique pour moi et a évoqué des situations complexes de la vrai vie: la sensation qu'il y a des gens très occupés derrière une porte fermée par example, la sensation d'être mystifiée par ce que ces gens peuvent être en train de faire, qui sont-ils? Tout ça capturé dans une simplicité complète si déceptive.

I AM NUMBER FOUR // NUMÉRO QUATRE

Based on a romantic teenage novel, I AM NUMBER FOUR begins with a sweeping flight over some unknown jungle just before NUMBER THREE gets taken out. The movie then takes us to the plushest Florida beach, filled with delectable young beauties enjoying the good life. Here we meet John Smith played by ALEX PETTYFER, a gorgeous young actor, who is NUMBER FOUR.

It seems like we will be in for quite a ride. Unfortunately, the film did not know who its audience was. Where you expect a splendid combat scene between John's protector Henry, played by TIMOTHY OLYPHANT , who is supposed to be a great warrior on their birth planet, and one or more of the evil extraterrestrials, we find a modern earthling battling with the internet. Then there is the strangely unfolding romance between John and Sara. I say strangely because when they are in the High School surrounded by heavily armed aliens, they pause to develop photos??!!

The highlight of the action happens when NUMBER SIX played by TERESA PALMER appears on the scene. At last a heroine who can fight and who knows what she has to do! The best part of this movie is the adorable dog, a changeling sent to protect NUMBER FOUR.

I was very excited to go see this movie, and it saddens me that I have some negative feedback about it. The ending suggests there may be a sequel. If there is one, I hope they will focus more on where the story is going. This way our hearts will beat because of the excitement of the action instead of by being bewildered by the incongruities.

Basé sur un roman pour adolescent, NUMÉRO QUATRE débute avec un survol spectaculaire au dessus d'une jungle inconnue juste avant que NUMÉRO TROIS se fasse assassiner. Le film nous transporte ensuite sur une superbe plage de la Floride, remplie de beautés ravissantes en train de faire la belle vie. Ici nous rencontrons John Smith, interprété par ALEX PETTYFER, un très séduisant jeune comédien, qui est NUMÉRO QUATRE.

On dirait bien qu'on se prépare à vivre toute une aventure. Malheureusement, le film ne sait pas qui est son publique. Quand on s'attend à une scène de combat engageante entre le protecteur de John, Henry interprété par TIMOTHY OLYPHANT , qui est supposé être un grand guerrier sur leur planète natale, et un ou plus de ces vilains extraterrestres, on retrouve un terrien moderne qui vie sa bataille par l'internet. Ensuite il y a l'étrange dénouement de la relation amoureuse entre John et Sara. Je dis étrange parce que quand ils sont à l'école entourrés par des extraterrestres hyperarmés, ils prennent une pause pour développer des photos??!!

La meilleure partie de l'action arrive quand NUMÉRO SIX interprétée par TERESA PALMER arrive sur la scène. Voilà enfin une héroine qui peut se battre, et qui sait ce qu'elle doit faire! Le voleur de scène est le petit chien adorable, une créature qui peut se métamorphoser envoyer sur Terre pour protéger NUMÉRO QUATRE.

J'étais très excitée d'aller voir ce film, et cela me peine d'avoir des commentaires négatifs à son sujet. La fin suggère qu'il y aura une deuxième partie à ce film. Si il y en a une, j'espère qu'ils porteront plus attention à la direction de l'histoire. Comme ça nos coeurs batteront à cause de l'excitation que nous donne l'action du film au lieu d'être abasourdie par les incongruités.

CEDAR RAPIDS

ED ELMS stars in the role of Tim Lippe, a naive 34 year old insurance salesman who is about to confront the truth about himself and those he thought he knew. The rhythm of the movie is subdued as a group of insurance people gather for their annual convention in the modern city of CEDAR RAPIDS. The cast includes stars like SIGOURNEY WEAVER, JOHN C. RILEY, ANNE HECHE. Each encounter tears a belief away from our hero who must deal with reality in the modern age: wives have affairs, winners are sometimes cheaters, crazy colleagues will sometimes be the ones who will have the balls to stand by you when you fail to live up to your inflated standards. I thought it had some very funny moments and some unexpected plot twists that made the movie worth watching for me.
If you need a laugh, this is the one for you.

ED ELMS tient le rôle principal de Tim Lippe, un vendeur d'assurance naïf, âgé de 34 ans, qui est sur le point de confronter la vérité sur lui-même et ceux qu'il croyait connaître. Le rhythme du film est refréné pendant qu'un groupe de vendeurs d'assurances se réunissent pour leur convention annuelle dans la ville moderne de CEDAR RAPIDS. La distribution contient des vedettes comme SIGOURNEY WEAVER, JOHN C. RILEY, ANNE HECHE. Chaque interaction déchire une croyance établie à notre héros qui doit s'ajuster à la réalité de l'âge moderne: les épouses ont des aventures, les gagnants sont quelquefois des tricheurs, les collègues les plus fanfarons peuvent quelquesfois être ceux qui auront l'audace de demeurer à vos côtés quand vous ne vivez pas à la hauteur de vos attentes envers vous-mêmes. Pour moi ce film a des moments très hilarants et des tournures assez surprenantes pour que le film me plaise.
Si vous avez besoin de rire, c'est le film qu'il vous faut.
