Mtl à Table

The yearly event focused on presenting Montreal, MTL à Table restaurants to the international visitors is about to begin. No matter which area of the city you are staying at Montreal's public transportation system (STM) system can get you to the restaurants of your choice on time. Click on the link http://www.stm.info/en and you will get a detailed route and time to reach your destination.

Here are a few of my favorite choices with very easy access by bus or metro:

In the area known as The Village there are several restaurants that offer a wonderful atmosphere on top of great service and delicious cuisine. This year all the participating restaurants were challenged to prepare their menus with Quebec grown ingredients whether these be the meats, the vegetables, or the spices.

There is AU PETIT EXTRA on Ontario street that has a wonderful reputation for service quality and ambiance. For this event they propose the following three main courses in their Table d'Hôte Menu: "Nagano" pork filet with honey and balsamic vinegar, sautéed artichokeMonk fish in red wine stew with mussels and Stimpson's surf clamBraised Ox cheek, Pebre sauce.
  Papineau -Bus : 45 North

LE SALOON is one of my favorite places to have a burger and fries! For this event they have put together a succulent Table d'Hôte, here are their three main courses: Grilled-cheese on round loaf bread, crafted smoked ham, Victor et Berthold cheese, caramelized apple, old cheddar, served with green salad or french fries with a side of green saladQuebec salted pork belly, root vegetables warm saladDuck confit Shepard’s pie: homemade cream corn, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes with parmesan cheese.
Papineau -walking distance

BEAVER HALL BISTRO GOURMAND is smack in downtown Montreal in very close proximity to the Bell Center and shopping centers. It is part of the EUROPEA franchise that is known worldwide for it's excellence. Take a look at their three main course choices: Quebec grain-fed veal stuffed with Prosciutto, parmesan and sage, potatoes, seared mushrooms, roasted salsifis served with watercress and fresh herbsLobster bisque risotto, served with shrimps, asparagus, spinach and enoki mushroomsParmesan and mushroom Gnocchis, truffle, arugula salad and truffle emulsion.
Square-Victoria–OACI -walking distance

I will be sampling and reporting on RESTAURANT DE L'ITHQ that is proposing a Nouvelle Cuisine Table d'Hôte: Plat de côte of Boileau venison contisé with black garlic, reduced gravy, roasted onion consommé tart, coffee and onion jellyChar in saor, wilted Swiss chard leaves and stewed stems, black riceCiammotta in crosta: zucchini and pepper confit, burnt eggplant, La Maison Grise Crottin cheese, spelt shortcrust and warm einkorn wheat foam. A lot to think about before deciding what to sample.
Sherbrooke -walking distance

I will make my report in two weeks. Enjoy Montreal's great restaurants!
BON APÉTIT!

As a blogger, and before that a radio show producer and host, I deal with PR people on a regular basis. It is quite a job! Some PR people are fabulous with all journalists and some ... not so much! I received an email from Karine Delage owner of Karyzma Agency who is informing me that the public can now follow the adventures of a PR agency as it deals with high profile customers, the media, the fans and the large scale events that bring them all together.

Karyzma will get you talking. Check out the trailer here:

I thought it was a very interesting project.

Il Était une Fois... Le Western • Once Upon a Time... The Western 14.10.2017 > 04.02.2018

Photos © Lena Ghio, 2017
ENGLISH

For the past two weeks, the new exhibition Once Upon a Time ... The Western at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been dazzling the public. Nathalie Bondil, General Director and Chief Curator of the MMFA, says that the idea of producing a thematic exhibition on the western came to her mind as soon as she settled in Montreal, the "Door to the West", she says. The exhibition is huge. It covers all the eras when the western influences culture and people's way of life. It is as educational as it is surprising with hitherto unseen artifacts.

When you enter the first room, you immediately feel like the pioneers who were sinking into vast territories inhabited by the First Nations. So many tragic mistakes marred this past. If it was an awful time for aboriginal people, it was pretty horrible for women as well. Nevertheless, there was a fervor that led everyone to act as they did. All this fed art, cinema and shows like those in which Wild West legends like Wild Bill Hickok showed off their prowess.

The magnificent canvases created during those rough years such as “Cunnawa-bum”, Métis (Plains Cree and British Ancestry) by Paul Kane, a Canadian artist, dazzled me. Landscapes, sculptures, posters, an authentic diligence that belonged to Buffalo Bill and the motorcycle from Easy Rider, an iconic film about modern "wild west" with Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda.

There is a very rich programming that I invite you to consult HERE.

Mary-Dailey Desmarais, curator of international modern art and Thomas Brent Smith, director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art (PIWAA), have done a monumental job. The scenography is signed by Sandra Gagné, Head of Exhibition Production at the MMFA, and Nathalie Crinière of the NC Agency, Paris.

NOUVELLES / NEWS 21.10.2017

ENGLISH FRANÇAIS -

Mental illness is a plague on humanity that is the most difficult to deal with. In our province for example, if a member of your family is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and is having an psychotic attack, calling 911 is not enough to get them help. The law says the ill person must consent to being helped. The system expects people in profound mental confusion to suddenly go: Oh my yes, I need help! when the exact symptom of the illness is THEY CANNOT ASK FOR HELP! Because the illness makes them delusional. Just one of the traumatic realities confronting these very sick individuals. Society sees mostly the side effects of mental illness: strange behavior, strange way of dressing: and do not consider the fact that there are very serious, very destructive illnesses that affect the entire body of the person and wreak havoc on the people who love them.

For the last five years, for a few days in the fall, Au Contraire Film Festival on Mental Illness, founded by Philip Silverberg brings together experts in many fields of expertise around compelling documentaries on the subject of mental illness. This year's spokesperson is the extremely talented Florence K who herself suffers from bouts of depression.

Opening night at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is October 24th and the festival continues until October 27th. Check here for the full program.

RIDM • 9 - 19 Nov. 2017

ENGLISH FRANÇAIS -

Humanity is in an existential crisis like it has never known. RIDM reflects all the dilemmas of our time. The films that I propose to you are the ones that best synthesize what we now confront as a species.

The opening film 24 Davids presents us with 24 characters all having the name David. Intellectually we are all assimilating huge amounts of data from diverse disciplines and doing the best we can to try and make sense of it while time is in an irrepressible accelerated mode. That's the essence of this fascinating film.

DPJ is a documentary that goes to the heart of the dramas of modern childhood. The role of the DPJ is to intervene on behalf of the most vulnerable to protect them from the only adults they know and love even if they are monsters.

DHC ART célèbre ses 10 ans / celebrates its 10th year

ENGLISH BELOW •

October 5 octobre -March 11 mars 2018

• I shall never forget my first visit to DHC-ART on October 5th, 2007. It was raining and windy and I did not know where it was. The freshly renovated place still smelled like paint. Marc Quinn was present as well as Phoebe Greenberg for this inaugural press tour. I was so excited about being able to meet and talk to this great British artist, my heart was beating. Here are more illustrious artists to have had exhibitions at DHC-ARTSophie CalleJenny HolzerCeal FloyerJohn CurrinBerlinde De BruyckereRyoji Ikeda and many more!

CONGRATULATIONS & THANK YOU!

October 5 octobre -March 11 mars 2018

To mark its 10th anniversary, DHC-ART proposes a reflection on all the meanings that the word offer can have in popular and traditional ritual practices. In our culture, for example, we have hosted several   celebratory events that serve as opportunities to exchange gifts. Under the umbrella of sincere feelings, we see them parading before our eyes like a promotional clock: Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter to name a few.

Here we explore tangent reflections. The concept that fascinated me the most was Lee Mingwei'Money For Art #1-5. He creates participatory installations where his actions are going towards others and they are asked to participate, give back as it were. The origin of the above work were serendipitous. While making origami sculptures out of 10$ bills, the artist attracted people who were curious about what he was doing. He seized the moment to converse with them and then made them a proposal, he would give them the origami 10$ sculptures if they would share their contact information to find out what happened to the gift. While we were doing the guided tour he related many stories on how each person dealt with their gift. He recounted that the only person who kept the work intact was a homeless man.

I highly recommend the guided tours to learn more about the intriguing concepts behind the works. Curator Cheryl Sims will give an English guided tour Saturday November 4 at 4 PM. It is free but you must reserve a place. Check this link to find out more about the various educational activities.
