I have been screening many intriguing movies! Here are a few for you to consider and don't forget, these movies will get released on larger scales during the coming months.

APORIA •Directed by Jared Moshé  

                                                    Edi Gathegi as Mal with Judy Greer as Sophie

Sophie has lost her husband Mal to a drunk driving accident and she is devastated. Next door is one of Mal's closest friends, a dilettante scientist like himself, interpreted by Payman Maadi. Before his untimely death the two friends had been working on a time machine because Payman never got over the loss of his family and wanted to get them back. Payman decides to test the machine with Sophie by killing the drunk driver who had killed Mal in the first place. When Mal shows up the next day, she is brought back to life but then the ethical questions and ramifications of her decision reveal that her blessing is another's tragedy. 

I truly enjoyed this thoughtful science fiction that takes us on twists and turns with subtlety and soulfulness. For example, you will know everything as changed when a character's clothing changes colour. Although there are no more screenings at Fantasia, keep an eye out for the theatrical release. I recommend it!

WITH LOVE AND A MAJOR ORGAN •Directed by Kim Albright

Hamza Hak as George with Anna Maguire as Anabel

This is a fairy tale that examines how our use of technology and the demands of urban life can limit the opportunity to find true love and happiness. Anabel (Anna Maguire) is not like the people in her environment who are ruled by an app, LifeZapp. This app does everything for them. For example, when her friend Casey (Donna Benedicto) gets married instead of letting Anabel, her maid of honour, organize the bachelorette party, the friend wants LifeZapp to take care of it so everything will be as she wants it. In this fantasy, people don't suffer broken hearts. They take them out of their chests and often throw them away. She meets a possible love interest in George (Hamza Haq) but his peculiar character makes her throw away her heart in pain.

An intriguing examination of where we are going and whether or not our choices are consciously made or governed by an app.

George MacKay as Preston and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules aka Aphrodite Banks

What attracted me to this movie is the synopsis: a drag queen is attacked and plots revenge on the attacker. My curiosity was piqued. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. As Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), the victim, gets to know Preston (George MacKay), the attacker, and plans to out him as a straight man who is secretly gay on a porn site, he also becomes aware of the foibles in his tormentor's life. Meanwhile, Preston grows fond of Jules. Edgy, sexy and devastating.

The acting is superb and the tension relentless. This movie will be coming out, no pun intended, later this year. I recommend it.

MONTREAL IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: Festival Fierté Montréal August 3 to 13, 2023

Festival Fierté Montréal is one of the most enjoyed Gay Pride event on Earth. However, the pandemic and last year's debacle have left Montreal Pride in a sad place. Today's conference addressed many concerns even some beyond the mere festivities. The issue that troubles me the most is the rise in homophobia and hate crimes against the 2SLGBTQIA+ community around the world. In North America, the MAGA movement, the GOP in American politics with Canadian people who somehow see themselves as Republicans  are publicly and aggressively expressing their prejudices with the intent of being cruel and hurtful. This is very disturbing. Everyone on Earth has an 2SLGBTQIA+ relative. Some of the people I have enjoyed the most are from this community.

Montreal Gay Village 2018

On top of the social negativity plaguing the community, the Gay Village in Montreal has suffered major losses due to the pandemic. Beautiful well groomed terraces, plants, design styling, art exhibition contributed to making this a hot spot for all communities. Since the pandemic, many restaurants and bars that offered shows had to close. 

A concern to revive the village was studied by the organizers of Montreal Pride and efforts are taken in this direction and on how to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. There will be a series of conferences (look for microphone icon on images) that will take place at the Hyatt Place Montréal on August 5th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and August 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Celebrating Our Spirits.

BUT THIS IS A TIME TO CELEBRATE!

I included two samples we enjoyed this morning, above BLK PRL Sandy Duperval and below, Gisèle Lullaby gives a spirited performance. There will be many artists of many disciplines doing their thing. On the site you will get a day by day description of the events of the day and information about everything that is evolving. 

And, of course, there are the PARTIES!!!!

THE PARADE

Get ready for the spectacular no holds bar Pride Parade! There is an expected 15 000 people marching in the parade that will happen on August 13, 2023 starting at 1 p.m. on the corner of René Lévesque Boulevard and Metcalfe heading east until it reaches Alexandre de Sève.

FANTASIA FEST  is an opportunity to explore any fantasy you can imagine. However, sometimes the festival offers up documentaries that make us think : this could not have happened! That is the case of the first movie I screened, Satan Wants You. 

Michelle Smith and Dr. Lawrence Pazder co-authors of the book Michelle Remembers.

This documentary illustrates how a woman's obsession with a man and her devious plot to take him away from his family rippled through the world into a frenzied obsession with satanism and satanic possession. The documentary is crazier than fiction! The movie is well structured and in the beginning we don't realize the special quality of Michelle Smith's mental derangement and callousness. I found that throughout the doc she has a recognizable smirk on her face that reveals her fraudulent intentions. Dr Pazder is smitten by her beauty and vulnerability so he is oblivious to her machinations.

I was captivated from beginning to end! Not to be missed!

Raging Grace

Raging Grace is about undocumented Filipina housekeeper living in England, Joy played by Max Eigenmann, is doing the best she can to survive with her young daughter Grace played by Jaeden Paige Boadilla. She has very little money but is saving as much as she can so she can provide a safe home for her child. The two live in the basement nook of a building so when Joy is offered a well paying position at a luxurious mansion where she will have a room, it's an offer she cannot refuse! 

The woman who hires her, Katherine played by Leanne Best, appears suspicious to Joy when  she questions how much medication Katherine is giving her comatose uncle, M. Garrett played by David Hayman, who is supposed to be dying of cancer.  Mischievous Grace follows Katherine and discovers some disturbing secrets. 

A high stakes cat and mouse game begins when Katherine takes a short trip and Joy realizes she has made serious mistakes in judgement.

I was on the edge of my seat with this horror flick with relentless twists and turns. Although there are a few loose ends, the pace of the movie pushes us forward into the unimaginable nightmare Joy and her daughter have awakened into. 

The film is directed by Paris Zarcilla who also hosts the screenings.

MONTREAL IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: SOPHIE SUCRÉE Vegan Bakery

On Friday July 14, I visited sophie sucrée, a vegan bakery at 3770 Saint - Laurent blvd in the heart of Montreal, who were celebrating 10 years of operations. Quite a feat! I just loved the festive decorations and overall style of the establishment where you can have a snack, buy baked goods for your home or get a beverage on the way.

I tasted some of the goodies that were offered to patrons on the day of celebration and I must recommend their luscious thick chewy chocolaty brownies!

LA MONTAGNE

BANDE ANNONCE

Un film de Thomas Salvador qui, en plus d'avoir réalisé le film et collaboré sur le scénario avec Naïla Guilet, incarne Pierre, un homme qui rejette la société pour se lancer dans l'exploration de la montagne.

Le film se déroule à Chamonix, un site touristique incrusté dans le Mont Blanc, le plus haut sommet de l'Europe occidentale. Étant le point culminant de la chaîne des Alpes, le film nous offre une cinématographie époustouflante de l'immensité de celle-ci.

Pierre a un affect plutôt plat. On reconnaît mal ses émotions et pensées alors qu'il explore les hauteurs, les crevasses des monts et un effondrement qui le fascine. Il rencontre Léa, interprétée par Louise Bourgoin, une femme qui oeuvre dans le restaurant au sommet. On voit un peu plus d'animation du personage lors de ces interactions ainsi que quand il découvre ce qui semble être une pierre incandescente rouge qui bouge et semble vivante. J'ai eu la même réaction que Pierre et j'ai tout de suite fait une recherche que je voulais ajouter à l'article mais, comme Pierre, je n'ai pas trouver sur Google l'explication que je désirais.

Finalement, en suivant ces limaces de magma, Pierre trouve son expérience subliminale qui lui permet de transcender les structures limitées de nos sociétés contemporaines.

Je trouve cela étonnant comment les alpinistes du Mont Blanc sont si légèrement vêtus.

MONTREAL IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: Montréal Complètement Cirque until July 16 2023 / Le Géant until July 30, 2023

Summer is so good in the city this year. Everywhere you go you will find shade, food, or a free show! It is not too late to enjoy the last weekend of Montréal Complètement Cirque going on in many parcs in across the island. 

Featured here is Le Géant presented by Cirque Éloize. This creation unfolds in front of L'Anneau at Place Ville-Marie, a stunning landmark unveiled last fall. The performances are supported by well known classics like the Four Seasons of Vivaldi, Bach's thunderous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and Beethoven's Ode to Joy. This show is free and will be on until July 30th.

From where we were watching, we faces Mount Royal. I just adore the view that looks like a far away land in some fairy tale.

UN PRIX DE CARRIÈRE HONORIFIQUE À NICOLAS CAGE

 

WE ARE ZOMBIES DE RKSS PRÉSENTÉ EN CLÔTURE

 

Le Festival international de films Fantasia, dont la 27^e édition aura  lieu à Montréal du 20 juillet au 9 août 2023, est heureux de dévoiler l’ensemble de sa programmation composée de plus de 120 longs et 200 courts métrages. Fantasia annonce aujourd’hui qu’un Prix de Carrière honorifique sera remis au comédien Nicolas Cage pour l’ensemble de sa carrière. La 27^e édition se clôturera avec WE ARE ZOMBIES du collectif de cinéastes québécois RKSS le 9 août prochain. Finalement, le festival dévoile également les membres des jurys ainsi que les titres en lice pour le prix Cheval Noir. La programmation complète et l’horaire des projections sont disponibles en ligne dès maintenant, sur le site web du festival. La billetterie ouvrira dès le 15 juillet.

 

PRIX DE CARRIÈRE HONORIFIQUE REMIS À NICOLAS CAGE

Cette année, Nicolas Cage brillera sur les écrans de Fantasia dans le film SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL de Yuval Adler. À cette occasion, l’acteur recevra les plus grands honneurs du festival Fantasia avec un Prix de Carrière honorifique, en reconnaissance de sa capacité à donner vie à des personnages fascinants et de son aura auprès du public. Après plus de 40 ans de carrière au cinéma, Nicolas Cage s'est distingué en offrant des performances et des personnages inoubliables que ce soit dans des drames tels que Leaving Las Vegas, des comédies comme Vampire's Kiss, des films d'action tels que Face/Off ou encore des thrillers comme Mandy.

 

WE ARE ZOMBIES PRÉSENTÉ EN CLÔTURE

Le collectif québécois RKSS formé de François Simard, Anouk Whissell et Yoann-Karl Whissell est de retour à Fantasia pour présenter leur nouveau long-métrage WE ARE ZOMBIES, en première mondiale et en clôture du festival. Inspiré de la bande-dessinée "Les Zombies qui ont mangé le monde" de Jerry Frissen, WE ARE ZOMBIES met en vedettes Megan Peta Hill (Riverdale), Alexandre Nachi (1991) et Derek Johns (The Boys) dans une comédie d’horreur où les humains tentent de cohabiter avec des zombies inoffensifs. Après le succès du film Turbo Kid, présenté à Sundance et dont le long-métrage avait bénéficié du soutien du marché de Fantasia, c'est avec plaisir que le festival retrouve les enfants terribles du cinéma québécois. Le trio Road Kill Superstars (RKSS) donnera également, dans le cadre du marché Frontières, une classe de maître modérée par Andrew Mack, journaliste à Screen Anarchy.

 

AUTRES TITRES EN PRIMEUR

Parmi les nouveaux titres qui viennent bonifier la programmation de cette 27^e édition, soulignons la première Nord-Américaine du film LES RASCALS, du réalisateur français Jimmy Laporal-Trésor, dont le premier long-métrage plonge dans les années 1980, à Paris, pendant la montée du mouvement skinhead; Fantasia présentera aussi en première Nord-Américaine et en compétition pour le Cheval Noir TIGER STRIPES de la réalisatrice malaisienne Amanda Nell Eu, film d’horreur sur le passage à l’âge adulte, récipiendaire du Grand Prix de la Semaine de la Critique à Cannes cette année. Le public pourra également profiter de nombreuses primeurs pendant les trois semaines de festival dont APOCALYPSE CLOWN de George Kane, une comédie d’horreur irlandaise sur une troupe de clowns ratés ; PANDEMONIUM du réalisateur Quarxx, spécialiste de l’épouvante, de retour à Fantasia après avoir remporté le prix du jury pour le meilleur court-métrage international en 2016 ; SAND LAND du mangaka japonais Akira Toriyama, auteur du célèbre manga Dragon Ball, dont l’adaptation de la série du même nom sera présenté en première canadienne; une rétrospective mettant à l’honneur le cinéma de la Corée-du-Sud des années 90 au début des années 2000 en projetant des oeuvres uniques comme PEPPERMINT CANDY de Lee Chang-dong, la comédie dramatique CHILSU AND MANSU de Park Kwang-su ou IO ISLAND du réalisateur Kim Ki-young. Des tables rondes et des discussions avec les artistes viennent compléter la programmation, dont une causerie spéciale avec Larry Kent, récipiendaire du Prix du pionnier canadien à Fantasia cette année.

On a glorious sunny day in my hometown, Montreal, I had the wonderful opportunity to go to the launch of a gorgeous new structure inviting visitors to the city BONJOUR MONTRÉAL on the Grand Quay situated at 200 rue de La Commune in front of the Archeological Museum Pointe-à-Callière.

The Old Port is just a lovely place to visit and refresh yourself as you discover Montreal. There are plants, parasols, chairs in multiple areas and refresh mists for those hot days.

The new STRUCTURE BONJOUR will give you a unique opportunity to capture images with the sign and the city's skyline in the background. M. Yves Lalumière, the CEO of Tourisme Montréal launched the creative project with two extraordinary design studios:  Rümker and Cadabra/XYZ , and the precious collaboration of the Administration of the Old Port and Développement économique Canada pour les régions du Québec (DEC).

Once you have spent time admiring the view, walk towards the river to discover the Port of Montreal Tower where you can go to the top for a remarkable experience. I the gif above I added a few images but there are so many beautiful angles from where to take photos.

MONTREAL IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: SWEET FOLIE • Oasis Immersion

Montreal has come alive with gorgeous vegetation, delicious food, great views and dazzling creativity. A visit to SWEET FOLIE, a mystical yet playful immersive creation brought to you by OASIS Immersive Studios and Colegram, is the perfect way to cool down before moving on to other activities. 

Ilyaa Ghafouri, known for his cinematic work on films like Arrival, has created the soundtrack for the first part of the tour, Murmures, where you will meet Junior, above, a genie / spirit guide / mascot to Colegram who will take you on a meditative journey.  Stay as long as you need before moving on and return a bit more if needed.

The second Gallery is Charivari where you visit the most unusual exhibition of animated art works. The hot rhythms of Totally Sublime support the lively projections.

There is a lot going on in Gallery Bingo Bango 

Finally, you arrive at the third Gallery Bingo Bango  where everything comes alive. This is the children's favorite room where they quickly unmask how to get the interactions going and enjoy jumping and running to the musical compositions of all the musical artists combined. To crown the ending with a blast, Junior presents his own fashion show!
