A WOMAN AT WAR

What wonderful female characters played by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir who plays Halla / Ása middle aged twin sisters that illustrate two sides of the terrible issue that must concern all humanity at this time, protecting our life giving planet from our own excesses. The screenplay was written by Ólafur Egilsson, Benedikt Erlingsson who also directs the movie. I was very impressed by how every point of view on the subject of protecting our planet was delicately interwoven in the apparently innocuous interactions between the characters. Halla is so fiercely dedicated and competent as she runs through the Icelandic terrain to sabotage a local aluminum industry to protect the terrain she loves. Asa is a yoga teacher who wants to deepen her personal connection to Spirit in the hope her upliftment will help nature. Unexpectedly Halla receives the news that her application to adopt a child from Ukraine has finally come through and a sweet four year old orphan is available. The ending is very fulfilling yet ominous as Halla must walk through a flooded road with her new daughter in her arms, the flood being one of the swiftest effect of global warming.
I LOVED IT!

Meryl Streep

This is a riveting investigative look at how the movie industry has evolved since its origins where women were the producers, directors and storytellers to now where the system is overpowered by white men. Hollywood superstars such as Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Geena Davis, Reese Witherspoon and more, come forward to tell how they experienced masculine prejudice sometimes in the most absurd way. An example of this comes from Meryl Streep when she describes how the men involved in her first Academy Award winning role in Kramer vs Kramer were stumped on what  the character would say was her reason for leaving her family behind and not one of them though to consult her, a woman, on why the woman left!

There are some fascinating surprises to emerge from the documentation of facts as they relate to how many parts are played by women, how many women directors work, how many women are present in children's cartoons!
