 If Beale Street could speak
A film by Moonlight's (Oscar for Best Picture, 2017) Barry Jenkins that outlines the tragic events confronting two young black people in love during the 70's in New York.

KiKi Layne plays the soft spoken heroine Tish Rivers who becomes pregnant by her lover Alonzo 'Fonny' Hunt played by Stephan James just before he is arrested for a horrific rape of which he is innocent. A lovely performance by Regina King, who plays Sharon Rivers, a woman who empathizes with the lovers overwhelming odds as they try to prove Fonny's innocence in a system ruled by white men who have already condemned him.

THUNDER ROAD

A film by Jim Cummings, who wrote directed and acted in this single take film that follows a distraught police officer's descent into chaos. He is Jimmy Arnaud, a character that is difficult to empathize with because he is so out of it with his awkwardness and emotional outbursts. He is not having an easy time of it. The film opens at his mother's funeral where he tries to give the eulogy but struggles. The scene is a little too long before the opening credits. I was wondering if I was looking at a short, but no! It goes on to him getting served divorce paper and more turmoil as he falls apart.

This film is featured in the competition this year.

MISHIMA: A Life in Four Chapters

A biographical film inspired by the Japanese author Yukio Mishima aka Kimitake Hiraoka directed by Paul Schrader and written by Paul Schrader and Leonard Schrader

Mishima was obsessed with the erotic beauty of sado-masochist sex. He has had homosexual relationships and explored many practices frowned upon by the Japanese establishment. In the end he took his life in a spectacular seppuku on November 25 1970.

The film is a visual splendor and brings Mishima's writing to life on the screen.
